I can't remember who told me about this book, but I am insanely grateful this book is on my bookshelf. Aha! That's one thing you can do is to "develop the gratitude attitude." That's quick and easy to do. Less than 59 seconds, as a matter of fact.What I find to be most interesting is the WHY. For each topic, Wiseman shares a number of fascinating research experiments (both his own and ones done by others) and then offers a number of specific suggestions on how to make it work in your own life. The first time, I read it from cover to cover. I found that it's better the second time around where you pick it up, read a section, then put it down, and try it out. Some of of the suggestions I don't really need (e.g.how to build instant rapport on a first date) but are interesting, nevertheless. Some of my favorite stories or suggestions?- Musical Chairs. "There are two schools of thought relating to group dynamics and creativity. One believes in not changing team membership, arguing that people then feel more comfortable with one another and so are happier to suggest the kinds of weird and wonderful ideas that are the hallmark of creativity. In contrast, the other point of view holds that it is better to generate new patterns of thinking by constantly mixing up the membership." Which is better? Weisman cites a study conducted by Charlan Nemeth and Margaret Ormiston at the University of California that concludes mixing it up is better.- Choose the Middle Way. If you want to increase your chances of making a good impression in a meeting, sit toward the middle of the table. Psychologists Priya Raghubir and Ana Valenzuela analyzed episodes of the TV game show, The Weakest Link, and found that the contestants in the center of the semi-circle won the game more frequently than those on the extremities. (Reminds me of the presidential primary debates!)- The Most Reliable Cues to Lying. Pay attention to the words that people use. "Liars tend to lack detail, use more "ums" and "ahs," and avoid self-references ("me,” "mine," "I"). In addition, people are about 20% less likely to lie in an email than in a telephone call, because their words are on record and are more likely to come back and haunt them!"

As one that rarely purchases physical copies; I have to say that I really enjoyed 59 Seconds. Wiseman is insightful, funny, and offers deep insight into the human psychology, in a easy and accessible way. It's a great book to add to one's collection, and does the job as a good conversation starter. From people not into psychology, all the way to people educated in psychological theory, 59 Seconds serves as a transformative, insightful book into changing your life.P.S. One part of the book I really enjoyed was when the author exhorted you to smile. Just try it now! Smile for 10 seconds. Even if you don't feel happy, force yourself to physically smile.How did you feel? Happier? Wiseman explains that phsyically smiling actually makes you psychologically believe that you are happy, and does wonders to your move. I never knew that before!

This is one of those books that are all over the place. From how to encourage your kids towards success to the best way to speed dating (or effective dating). It's like a Swiss Army knife for life and all the tips and hacks are condensed in a one minute principle (sort of). The book relies in studies and experiments done on the different topics as well as it analyzes counterparts and critics to some of the theories or conclusions. It's a good curious read. You might find some topic of interest. Good buy.

Its okay. The motivation chapter gives you methods to achieve you goals. If you apply the method and stick to it you will see results. However you can achieve you goals without this book all you need is determination to do it. The method is to break down your goals into smaller achievable steps then write the steps down on paper. you really do not need a book to tell you this. Other chapters on relationship advice or creativity are good but its nothing you could not google or look up yourself.

This book was incredible. I've never read one like it. If you are a fact lover who is looking to think about things differently, this is your book. So much respect for the author and all the hours he put into reading the studies that shaped his work. It's a self help book that you'll never fool your eyes at because everything he say is backed up by cold, hard, proven truth! If you're not into facts and stats, you may find it hard to read.

I'm not a die-hard bird watcher, but do feed them and enjoy them frequenting our property. Since moving to South Carolina, I have seen many that I am unfamiliar with, so this was the perfect book for me.

I am originally from the UK and have always had a huge interest in birds, but I have yet to learn about the birds I see here in South Carolina.This is the only bird book I have for South Carolina/the USA, so I cannot compare it to similar books, but I would say that it is a good book to have for identifying birds that you spot in your yard or wherever.I really like this book because- it has nice clear pictures- it tells you what you can expect to spot in each season- it shows you the silhouettes of hawks and vultures, so you can tell at a glance what they are, even though they seem to be miles above you- it tells you the food preferences and housing preferences of birds, so that you can encourage your favourite birds to visit- it tells you local places to go to spot birds- it tells you which birds are likely to be attracted to bird boxes, bird baths, bird feeders etcThe only negative thing I have to say about this book is that, for me, it doesn't go into enough detail about the birds, specifically size details and bird calls.Don't get me wrong, it is a very informative book, with lots of hints and tips and useful information, but you might find that you need another book to accompany it, if you want a little more detail about the individual birds.

I'm not sure why I ordered this book since I no longer have horses, but it sounded intriguing. I'm following the weekly format for the mental exercises and am enjoying them very much, as well as the writing style of the author. There's warmth and humor and I'm learning new ways to approach daily life. The physical exercises look very appropriate if riding is still a part of your life.

Lots of inspiring and motivating tips to improve riding skills, whether one aspires to compete or just grow as a rider. For me, nothing revolutionary, just a well-organized reminder of a systematic approach to fitness for the rider, and some new ways to look at exercising for condition, fitness, and suppleness.

Very well written and encouraging. Loved tidbits and insight. Made me excited about using it for the helpful tidbits and uplifting thoughts. Worth the read... now to act. :)

Fantastic Equine based fitness book. Easy to understand and to follow. Very relatable information with out being overwhelming. Coach Stewart has done it again in creating a great book for a cross discipline approach to equestrian fitness

This is an awesome book. It’s a great way to stay fit during winter and great way to get stronger after hip surgery.

James Treat has brought together an eclectic group of writings by Native Americans that deal, in one way or another, with Christianity. The quality of the writing is surprisingly high, and consistently so; I had expected greater variation in any anthology. Some of the selections are excerpts from larger works. As such they are not self-contained as fiction, though they work in the context of this volume. A couple did not seem to deal with religion but I am dense sometimes.Treat enters the book with a semi-fictionalized afterword that imagines itself as a proposal for an anthology of human fiction after aliens have colonized the Earth. The parallels to the book itself are obvious and a bit forced. Coming at the end of the book, this editorial intervention also seemed unnecessary. Rather than setting the stage for the readings the afterword tended to say things that a reader would already have figured out at that point.By fictionalizing the afterword, Treat wants to stake a claim for fiction as an alternative to nonfiction accounts of Natives' spiritual clash with Christianity. That's fine in principle, though my own tastes run to the nonfiction. In this context, however, this claim comes across as defensive. I may be reading too much into this but parts of the afterword suggest that Treat doubts whether fiction, as opposed to social action, can truly liberate.
