Unlike most battles of the war in Vietnam, the Battle for Hue City was a house-to-house urban street fight against a well-armed enemy that held fortified defensive positions in the third largest city in the country. Hue was a two-part city divided by the Perfume River. North of the river was the old walled city, known as the citadel. South of the river was a smaller part of the city, with substantial government, educational and church buildings.In late January 1968, the North Vietnamese ("NVA") and the Viet Cong ("VC") without detection successfully infiltrated thousands of soldiers and large quantities of food and ammunition that would be in place for a surprise attack in the early morning of January 31, the start of the national Tet holiday. Surprise was achieved and suddenly there were North Vietnamese and Viet Cong soldiers everywhere, attacking the key points in both parts of Hue. The 1st Division of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam ("ARVN"), which was at half-strength because of the holiday, had its headquarters in the northeast corner of the citadel. In the southern part of Hue, across the Perfume River, was the Military Assistance Command Vietnam ("MACV"), consisting of U.S. Army and Marine advisors, and a group of Australian advisors to the ARVN. After heavy fighting, both the ARVN headquarters and the MACV repulsed the initial North Vietnamese attacks. Except for those two limited areas, the NVA and VC were in control of both parts of Hue. The book details the agonizing efforts to get Marine reinforcements to the scene in the face of North Vietnamese attacks along the highway and poor weather, which inhibited air support. The author then walks the reader with the Marines along the narrow streets of the southern part of Hue City where the North Vietnamese and VC had embedded themselves in stone buildings. At every turn of the road, the Marines encounter machine gun fire from fortified positions. Eventually, the southern sector is cleared and the Marines are ordered to link up with the ARVN and clear the citadel of the enemy. All told, the battle lasted twenty-six days. The narrative is very well written and it personalizes the experiences of many of the Marines on the scene. The story virtually ignores the role of the ARVN, except to repeat a host of negative comments made some of the Marine grunts and their officers. Then, a little more than halfway through the book, there is a complimentary summary of the fighting by the ARVN Black Panther Company during the first week of the battle. Near the end of the book, there is another paragraph or two containing favorable comment about the Black Panther unit at the close of the battle. Those two comments seem out of place. It gives the impression that these two parts may have been added in response to criticism of the text omitting any coverage of the ARVN. Unfortunately, the coverage of the ARVN participation in the battle does not have the same level of factual detail that accompanies the story of the Marines. The number of ARVN killed and wounded was about double that of the Marines. The number of casualties inflicted on the enemy by the ARVN is not stated. Although many photographs and two maps enhance the story of the battle, the map of Hue City is marred by the book binding which runs right across the southern part of the Perfume River, obliterating most of the things that the reader will want to see. It would have been better had the map been repositioned on the page or, in the alternative, been made smaller.

Keith William Nolan died in 2009 from a familial type of lung cancer at the age of 44.I read every one of his books, and re-read several of them, including this one.His writing style, especially for historians and military veterans, was absolutely engaging. Nolan had the uncanny ability to synthesize complex battles and campaigns into readable histories, using a combination of military unit history, oral history, and classic published history.Nolan was simply head and shoulders above other war historians, particularly 'Nam historians.Nolan's works are studied at War College and West Point.Not a Veteran, and yet he served.

Excellent and thorough analysis and recounting of the most important battle of the war. Caused me to go back to my bookshelf and reread some of the classics. And order some I missed that Keith Nolan recommends.

That's my father in the back....I purchased several of these books as keepsakes. Great book as well. Sad to have to read what happened as he will never talk about it.

This read is what can only be termed as outstanding! The courage is chilling and heart wrenching. I consider it an honor to have served under an officer who fought at Hue.

I truly believe Keith Nolan wrote the most informative and interesting history of Vietnam's battles.As a combat infantryman, he paints a picture that I can truly see....Hue was one of the most important battles of the war and Keith did an outstanding job telling the story.

Great book detailing USMC fighting the NVA to the death!

Mr. Nolan really understood the Vietnam vet and wrote so you thought he was there at the time. This book is a good read.

At 50 years, I guess this famous sixties event seems about as pertinent as a Reformation church schism, but the book is entertaining. Wald uses the wide lens and possesses the requisite historical imagination to attempt to describe the campfire crew that was the butt of the joke. This isn't easily done because it's hard to imagine today's analogy to that innocence (Apple fanboys?). I suppose Joe Boyd was a little closer to the mischief in his description in White Bicycles but essentially the small group responsible for the sound seems to have wished to give part of the audience a little poke in the eye before watching it be buried in the sand of history. Dylan comes off like a mist driven by storm, creating what he can with scarcely a thought toward marketability (which was definitely part of the charm) and this is a big turning point in his performing biography: the ensuing ten months or so got nasty enough audience response that drummer Levon Helm quit to work on an oil rig. Dylan persisted to the end (and his motorcycle accident) but seldom seemed comfortable with his audience when he resumed performing ("all I see is dark eyes").I think Wald had yet a more interesting book but there's such an industry in Dylan biographies that he took the deal he could. He's especially good at perceiving and explaining all the social fissures within the broad folk "movement." And having been close enough to Dave Van Ronk to finish his autobiography Mayor of McDougall Street, Wald certainly has the inside scoop. He understands the commercial angles and he's listened to all the bootleg tapes. Finally, he's enough of a wit that there are plenty of laughs. Not your standard "artist versus audience" triumphal Dylan book and that's a good thing.

If you are a Dylan devotee, this book is a detailed, readable, objective account of Dylan's life through that famous/infamous night at the Newport Folk Festival. Wald does an excellent job of tracing the times and the people that in sum-total lead to the inevitability of this 20th Century Icon plugging a cord into his guitar. The story articulates: the rise of folk-rock as a synthesis of its foundational forms (including blues), the juxtaposition of Dylan and Pete Seeger leading up to the cultural transformation, and the impact Dylan's music has had on so many musicians (of many genres) who came after him. Only small criticism is that one group, The Grateful Dead, is not mentioned in the discussion, and probably should have been. A great cultural history of the 1960s.

Wald does what so few writers on popular music manage to do--he offers an historical argument. There is as much here about Pete Seeger and the folk revival scene as there is about Dylan. Reflecting his deep immersion in a variety of source materials, Wald contextualizes Dylan's (in)famous electric kiss-off better than any other writer I've read. In the process, he demythologizes and historicizes it. This is no simple-minded paean to Dylan-the-Genius. Instead, it is a brilliant exposition that illustrates how committed yet precious many of the Newport folkies were, yet also how diffident and careless Robert Zimmerman already was by 1965-66. As befits a truly great book, it offers no easy or definitive answers, and leaves the reader with more questions than when he first opened it.

This is a fantastic book about a moment in popular music that many people, including myself, thought was settled. Wald incorporates multiple source materials to show how the career paths of Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan both converged and diverged to culminate in the conflict over folk music that happened in Newport in 1965. Perhaps the most fascinating part of the book is when Wald lets various participants, including fans, recount their experience during Dylan's "electric" performance. The reader can then easily see that how music history remembers this moment is tied to the claims and stakes made about folk music. Maybe Wald spends a bit too much time getting to the 1965 performance, but the payoff is immense. Well-written and enjoyable overall, especially if like me you love reading about the history of American folk and popular music from around 1945-1965.

IF you have an interest in the history of the late 1950s-early 1960s 'folk' revival, and in Bob Dylan's impact on that movement and on the history of rock and roll, you will find this book fascinating. It's well written, fast paced, and told me a great deal I didn't know about a subject I thought I knew a great deal about. This is not, however, a book for Dylan fanboys - it is as much a book about Pete Seeger and the folk movement into which Dylan crashed, as it is about Dylan.

Interesting to a point, but far too detailed for my taste. Also, the last two chapters are like groundhog's day, he just keeps saying the same thing over and over again. Ok, I heard you the first time, I know what you think the meaning of that night was, there is no need to restate it 30 times.

Elijah Wald is one of the best musicologists I've ever read. His How the Beatles Destroyed Rock n' Roll is eyeopening, and this history of Dylan's electronic move shows the underlying revolutionary changes that were happening in the mid-1960s. Incidentally, Wald's father was a Nobel-Prize winning biologist and anti-Vietnam War activists and his mother, Ruth Hubbard, is a brilliant feminist biologist. Elijah understands the political climate of the 1960s like no other musicologist. He's also a player, so he understands the music from the inside.

There is a lot of this book that sets us up for Newport. I get that and it is done well, but it has a lot ofinformation that a Dylan fan and a 60's survivor already knows. The best part of the book is when it zones in on Newport, the history, the growth of the festival, the shows each year leading up to the electric meltdown.The reporting on the Dylan Goes Electric weekend is precise and complete.I'm glad I read the book.

This cookbook has a truly bizarre collection of recipes and is in need of an editor/proofreader. Seriously, did no notice that there is an Orange Chicken with Noodles recipe and Whole Wheat Pizza with Chia Seeds recipe in the breakfast section? Or that some of the recipe instructions call for ingredients that aren't on the ingredient list? There are far better books available for far less money. Don't waste yours on this.

Didn't realize this was a self-published book until I got passed the cover. Recipes are poorly organized. Total cook times don't add up. The recipes sound interesting, but the book is way too expensive for the quality of the cook book. No pictures inside either.

The English is terrible. The titles of the recipes often have ingredients that aren't in the actual recipe. The instructions have little to nothing to do with settings on the Cosori. There just is nothing to go on. I'm donating mine to the book drive for the library.

Last month my mom advised me to get a cosori pressure cooker,so I got it and also have got this cooking book to have some recipes to try in my new pot, my daughter asked me to cook Ginger and Shrimps dumplings for her, as instructions are easy to follow I made it easily and my family liked it, I want to try more recipes.

This book is great if you are in to health food. The first half of the book is salads and smoothies and grain breakfasts. You'll have to stock up on quinoa and chia seeds. There are literally no comfort foods in here. Very disappointed! The book is also very thin with not all that many recipes.I think you can find more on line.

I liked the format & design, however, most of the recipes were too elaborate to suit me. They focused on fancy rather than practical. The Internet is a much more valuable source of recipes, ideas, & uses for my Instant pot. It's okay, but nothing to rave about.

The recipes I have tried have been very good. I have only tried a few and will be trying more as time goes on.
