About the Author

Kelly, a "baseballoholic" and a self-described expert at negotiating airports, is in his 33rd year of teaching at the high school level. He currently teaches at Magnolia High School in Anaheim, California. He believes that "there is no greater pleasure than teaching someone something." Teaching is "artistic, it matters a great deal, and I can never get the job down perfectly."Kelly thinks that professional development should treat teachers as such - professionals. "I know in the classroom that good things happen when my students have meaningful discussions. I know as a teacher myself that my craft sharpens when I am given the opportunity to have meaningful discussions with my peers. And let's have a laugh or two while we are at it."Writing his six books for Stenhouse was a solitary experience. "Though I have written outlines prior to each of my books, I have yet to follow any of them step-by-step. That is why I find writing rewarding - because the act of writing itself generates new thinking, and new thinking is always exciting."

I went to a Kelly Gallagher training session about reading instruction over a year ago, and it was, far and away, the best professional development that I’ve ever been to. It was one creative, practical, and student-friendly idea after another. I immediately read two books by Gallagher about reading instruction (Deeper Reading and Readicide--both highly recommended) and have been incorporating his ideas into my classes ever since. It was my summer goal to take a look at what he had to offer with regard to writing instruction. As it happens, Write Like This was every bit as useful as the reading books were. He offers his general philosophy of writing instruction: (1) that students need to read real-world models and write for real-world purposes and (2) that the teacher--as the best writer in the classroom--should demonstrate the decisions that good writers make before the students. He then divides the book by the six general purposes of writing and offers multiple suggestions for approaches to teaching that kind of writing. It’s easy to see how students would find these assignments compelling, and it’s also easy to see how these strategies would help the students to be better writers. My only problem reading the book is not flaw of Gallagher’s. When I read it, I keep thinking, “This is what teaching should be like. Think how much my students would grow and improve if we could just do this stuff all year.” Of course, the sadness is that the district and state standards and the ridiculous testing my students will need to pass at the end of the year will mean that I’m forced to teach something of lesser quality and distorted purposes for at least a portion of the year. So it goes. I do think that every idea I pull from this book will make my class a better experience for my students.

I was given a copy of this book to use to teach struggling and at-risk students. I was told to start with Chapter 6, "Analyze and Interpret." As I used the chapter to write lesson plans I noticed a startling trend. Here are the references Gallagher uses in just this chapter:Write Like This by Kelly Galagher (white male)Chapter 6: Analyze & InterpretPg 135 Example Columbine, Dave Cullen (white male)Pg 136 Dr Robert Hare (white male)Pg 138 Phillip Niemeyer (white male)Pg 140 Shakespeare (Romeo & Juliet) (white male)Pg 140 Lindsay Ruben (colleague – no specific info available)Pg 140 Kelly Johlic (colleague – no specific info available)Pg 142 Nate Silver, blog (white male)Pg 143 Joan Steiner, Look-Alikes (white female)Pg 144 Joseph Griffith, The Surrender (white male)Pg 145 Edward Arlington Robinson, Richard Cory poem (white male)Pg 146 Lord Byron, Darkness poem (white male)Pg 149 Rick Reilly, “A Tale of Two Little Leaguers” (white male)Pg 150 Barry Bonds (African-American male) – subject, not author (athlete)Pg 150 Hank Aaron (African-American male) – subject, not author (athlete)Pg 152 Lindsay Lohan (white female) – example of something to blamePg 152 Animal Farm – Orwell (white male)Pg 152 Lord of the Flies – Golding (white male)Pg 156 AphorismsLord Acton (white male)Benjamin Franklin (white male)Ralph Waldo Emerson (white male)Mark Twain (white male)Friedrich Nietzche (white male)Shvejtsar (white male?)Andre Gide (white male)Alfred Tennyson (white male)Albert Einstein (white male)Bertrand Russell (white male)Sylvia Plath (white female)Malcolm Forbes (white male)Winston Churchill (white male)Oliver Wendell Holmes (white male)Pg 159 Bill Plashke (white male)Pg 160 Jered Weaver, Angels pitcher (white male)Pg 160 Kendrys Morales (Latino)Torii Hunter (African-American male) -- subject, not author (athlete)Vernon Wells (African-American male) subject, not author (athlete)Pg 161 Gwyneth Paltrow (white female)Pg 163 Harper Lee (white female)Pg 163 Rudolpho Anaya (Lationo?)Pg 164 Lawrence Wright, The Looming Tower (white male)Pg 167 Jon Hein, Jump the Shark (white male)Pg 167 Henry Winkler (white male)Pg 168 Tom Keogh, amazon.com reviews, no info availablePg 169 Chris Nashawaty (white male)Pg 171 Bob Dylan (white male)Pg 171 Herb Bowie (white male)Pg 172 Michelle Waxman (white female?)Pg 173 Incubus – rock groupPg 172 Sandra Cisneros (Latina)49 references to specific people33 white males – 67%5 white females – 10%3 no info available4 African-American males, all athletes2 Latinos – 04%1 Latina -- .02%0 African-American femalesGallagher relies heavily on white men as resources and examples. He uses a lot of sports resources and examples. The only time African-American males are referenced is when they are athletes--no African-American writers used. Zero African-American women used. I have spent my weekend re-writing my lesson plans to supplement the activities with a diversity of writer/authors. The strategies seem sound but the examples need updating.

I'm teaching high school ELLs to write. I have felt like I am floundering around for years and then this book came my way. This is a FANTASTIC resource with tons of easy to implement lessons on real-world writing. I'm using this almost exclusively in my classroom and I have seen tons of improvement in my students writing and engagement. I can't recommend this book enough.

I discovered this book through participation at a National Writing Project summer institute. It has been really helpful in rethinking the way I teach writing in my classroom. This book has many writing activity ideas and examples.

I am not a teacher, my English is a foreign language. I've been looking for exercices or methods that would help me practice writing. This book was the answer! It is excellent, I started writing, many many many ideas to write about not only in English but also in another foreign language too! I loved the topic exercise I now have plenty of ideas to write about, I already wrote some and I can't wait to write again, it is highly motivating!

Reading a book or two about teaching is something that is important to me as I keep trying to develop my skills as a teacher. I read another book by Kelly Gallagher a few years ago, so I wanted to read this one. I'm glad I did because it offered many excellent tips in how to help students write better. His main philosophy stems from these two premises: 1. Teach kids to write in the modes that they will need to write in college and in the real world. 2. Write along with your students.Gallagher is a seasoned teacher who clearly loves writing and teaching writing. He is a good mentor to have as I try to better equip my students to improve in writing. My only criticism is that there does not appear to be a frame around all these great activities. At times, things felt jumbled.

This is a beautiful book with many colorful pictures! However, it is more of an encyclopedia of the varieties of Japanese maples than a "complete guide". I wish there was more information about care of the Japanese maple. The information given was very basic. I would have wanted information on using them as bonsai or training the maples for shape etc etc.. Only about 1/4 of the book is actual care information. The rest is a summary of each variety; WHICH is great! but I wasn't expecting that.Another down side is that although they have information about each variety, they are organized alphabetically. For gardeners, this is not helpful because we need them to organized by type. For example, if I were looking for a weeping type, I would have to go through the whole book. No section on groupings.

Disappointed. A great history book and listing of every imaginable type of cultivar. But very little on cultivation. Most references to cultivation are very basic, without pictures, and refer one to another book for better instructions. I already knew what I could learn from this book about cultivation and I am new at this! A thorough book, so I won't bash it. But it is not what a newly interested grower is interested in.

This book just keeps getting thicker and thicker with each release! Now it's a hefty textbook size. The quality of the paper and colors in the book is quite good. As far as the information contained within, it's in the same vein as the previous versions. I have the 2nd version only, so compared to that, it's similar, if not better organized. The authors have expanded on the first few chapters of the book, regarding the history, and care of maples, but it's basically just added information to the previous text (a lot of it is verbatim from the earlier edition). I like how the cultivars are now organized simply by name. I'm not sure if this was something done in the 3rd ed, but in the 2nd, the cultivars were broken down into leaf shape, and then alphabetical. This was more difficult for me, and really served no purpose (in my opinion). The layout now makes more sense. The information for each cultivar is similar to previous editions. A couple of paragraphs with factual information regarding leaf type, shape, sun/shade requirements, etc. And of course, it includes a lot more than previous editions, as new cultivars are introduced. The book does have a few drawbacks though. My biggest gripe is with some of the photos. Though most are beautiful and accurate glossy photos, some are way overly photoshopped. Many people will make their maple selections based on what they think the leaves will look like, and some of the photos are so over the top, the reader will surely be disappointed when they see their maple in reality does not show the brilliant coloration as in the photo. One example is the photo of Ap Crimson Queen. You will clearly see the color "dial" in photoshop was turned to maximum, as the colors just simply look too saturated. There are plenty of other photos in the book which do not reflect the true nature of the plant illustrated. Comparing to my own collection, it is clear some of the book's photos have been tweaked to bring out aspects of the leaf which may not normally be so striking.Another nit-picky problem I have is with some of the name changes. Though perhaps scientifically and technically correct, changing some of the names around just makes it confusing. I have known "Ap Aka Shigitatsusawa" to be Aka Shigitatsusawa for a long time, and that is the way most nurserys (online and physical) call it. But the author made a specific point to rename this selection Ap Beni Shigitatsusawa. It may be technically correct, but trying to find the former in the book leads to a dead end. There are other examples of this, and it's nit-picky I know...but perhaps they could have better led the reader to the new, corrected entry.Overall, this is a nice, high quality book with good information. Though some of the photos could be more realistic, most are fine and only add to the information. It's one of the best quick reference books and makes a nice coffee table book. If you are a Japanese maple enthusiast, you'll find this book to be very good and full of good information.

Great resource for JM lovers.. but keep in mind these are Oregon observations sizes, colors, hardiness. and Oregon is very much like Japan.. and most of you do not live in either place . so take his writings with a grain of salt and don't expect same results. But this is a treasure trove of information.

Great book with excellent images and descriptions. I've used all three editions and this edition is the only book I know that covers most of the cultivars generally available. This book will be of interest to both beginners and experts and provides a common reference for discussing the various attributes of the trees listed. Just trying to keep current with the explosion of new crosses being introduced has to be a monumental task and I thank Mr. Gregory for continuing Mr. Vertrees initial work and for this excellent updated guide. You will not be disappointed in your purchase if you have any interest in Japanese Maples.

It's very nice of Peter Gregory to continue to give J.D. Vertrees so much credit. This book is the bible of Japanese Maple enthusiasts and collectors all over the world. This edition is much more comprehensive than the 3rd edition and the quality of photos is excellent. However, I was disappointed that many of the stable and worthy North American cultivars aren't mentioned and hope they will be included in subsequent editions. Still, this fourth edition is a terrific resource.

I looked at several books at a couple book stores, but couldn't find what I was looking for. After looking at different reviews online, I settled on this one. It's perfect for me because it has a very large list of different varieties and has pictures for most of them. I "collect" different varieties of japanese maples in my yard and this book is a great reference when I'm researching the next tree that I want to get or trying to identify a variety that I saw in a garden or someone's landscape.

I am a budding Japanese Maple collector and I enjoy looking through all the different varieties!
