Cool book but way too advanced for my 7 year old. Probably more geared toward 10 to 12 year old.

Just took a 2 day trip in the car, there and back, and this really helped pass the time for my daughter. It's filled with a lot of fun games and things to do and learn. So glad that I had it. She is 7-1/2 and it was the perfect activity for her.

I looked all through this and really found it fun and interesting. All kinds of different activities, I don't thinj it will bore anyone. I didn't read the age description though and had bought it intending to give to my 8 year old on our long flight, but it really is much better suited for our teenager as a lot might be too tough for the 8 year old.

I brought this for my neice and nephew and it was more work than I was expecting. I was looking for something simple they could do to pass the time but these puzzles were a little more complicated. Overall, they were able to do the activities with no problem, so it was not an issue

6&9 year olds found the book boring. We drove across country and this lasted maybe 10 minutes but wasn't engaging.

My 9 and 11 year olds love these books!

My kids love it...highly recommended!!!!

The classic cross-cultural comparative study and ethnography of world shamanism. Dry as a bone. Dense and scholarly. I do not recommended it as an introduction to shamanism. Eliade also has a some difficulty rising above the moral demands of his personal world view.This is a pity. Still it is a treasure trove of information to be found nowhere else.

Greatest book on shamanism yet written.If you want to learn about shamanism, across a wide array of practices, learn about rituals, find deeper patterns and meaning in the practice, this is the book for you. Essentially, if you have any kind of interest in shamanism that isn't satisfied by Google, then this is the book you're looking for. It goes beyond the lay understanding, by far. You may be a believer by the end.

Ultimate encyclopedic reference book on shamanism around the world. As others have noted, it is not a primary source, but a secondary source that organizes and assesses all the primary source studies available, which allows the author to write about the cross-cultural similarities especially among cultures that have never encountered each other. Some knowledge of the time period during which the author was writing must be taken into account to explain any colonialist/etc. undertones, but the author clearly has a respect for the various magical and spiritual traditions and this shows.

If you are at all serious about the subject or practice you have to read this book, it's all in here, it's an account that is totally un-newageified if that makes any sense, you can make up your own mind some of it's touching some of it's light and soul saving and some of it's just the makings of down and dirty ritual at it's most transparent that you will find in any book.

This was one of my first reads on Shamanism. Really enjoyed. If you haven't read Eliade before he can be a bit of an intimidating read. However, this book is enjoyable and worth the effort

Gave Pittsburgh's Mansions to my brother as a Christmas gift. He unwrapped the package and immediately started to read it, ignoring the rest of his gifts. So many of the beautiful old homes featured in the book we knew in our childhood, but they are now gone, victims of progress. He spent an hour going through the book, reminiscing, and mourning the demise of architectural gems. Two days later, he was still talking about the book, so I would say it merits five stars. I recommend it highly as a gift for a current or ex-Pittsburgher. I plan to download a copy to my Kindle.

Interesting book. I grew up in Pittsburgh and have always been intrigued by the mansions that still remain. What a wonderful way to see what isn't here any more. I would recommend this to anyone with an interest in Pittsburgh.

Bought this for my 90 year old mother for Christmas. Before I gave it to her, I took a look through. Fascinating! She has enjoyed it too (even with my eye-tracks!)

This book is a walk down the streets of yesteryear! I knew many of these mansions and wish that there had been more int he way of text to go with the photos. At any rate, it was a pleasure to view some of these jewels.

I got this for my dad who is from Pittsburgh and he loved it! His old frat house was featured in the book - he absolutely loved getting this book for Christmas! It's a must for anyone from Pittsburgh!

Homes of two great uncles were in this. Many pictures of Chatham University mansions now dorms. Particularly Mellon Hall which was originally a dorm and my roommate and I slept in Andrew Mellon's bedroom.
