But when you look at those studies, it's where people have been dropped cold turkey off meds they had taken long term. Well, cold turkey withdrawal of psych meds is a hard and nasty process. So of course leaving people on drugs works better than dropping them suddenly into cold turkey withdrawal. But gradual withdrawal does work, and many people have gotten their lives back by learning how to use psych drugs appropriately as a tool instead of as the entire solution.Whitaker is not anti-medication, many of his supporters still use medications. Whitaker is not anti-psychiatry. He is anti-bullshit. Many psychiatrists support him, and are referenced in this book. But only the ones who have actually taken the time to learn the academic research in their own field. Don't believe the critics who cite 2-3 studies and think they have discredited this book without looking into details. This book cites like 400 studies, works with all the best patient advocates in the industry, and is the best science has to offer to explain both problems and solutions.If you want to know the real deal, this is the book to read. Most critiques of this book are very shallow, and have already been readily and easily disproven.

Many of the harshest reviews of this book seem to be coming from those who currently depend on psychiatric medications, and find the author's conclusions heartless, given their own distress. As a person diagnosed with MDD (major depressive disorder) 22 years ago, and medicated with a substantial cocktail of psych drugs for 20 years after that diagnosis, I want to add my perspective to this discussion. My life is better without the medications. I can't say that will be true for everyone, but it is true for me.I read Robert Whitaker's book almost two years ago, and his conclusions alarmed me. I also had to honestly wonder, do I really feel better on all these medications than I would without them? I had been told by well-respected psychiatrists at two major research universities that the only way to prevent recurring depressive episodes was to be on medication for life. I had believed them, and taken the medications. I felt reasonably okay a lot of the time, though somewhat dulled and flattened by the meds. But I still had debilitating depressive episodes, sometimes lasting for months, in spite of the medications. As I looked around at my many, many friends and family members on psychiatric medications, it seemed to me that most of them were still pretty substantially depressed a lot of the time.For years I had found the notion of "chemical imbalance" reassuring. The solution to my mental distressâ€“medicationâ€“was no different than if I had diabetes and needed insulin, apparently! Taking psych meds with this perspective makes you feel that you are doing your best to take care of yourself, which is reassuring when you're still feeling awful. You're doing what you can do. "Better living through chemistry!" I used to wryly joke, as I'd down my cocktail of three or more medications every night. I regularly saw my psychiatrist, who would tweak the meds here and there to give me better relief.How sad that the "chemical imbalance" theory just doesn't hold up to actual research! I understand how doctors came to use that analogy to reassure patients who were alarmed at the prospect of being on mind-altering drugs for long periods of time. But there are no chemicals being balanced here. The drug effects are powerful, but they are not restoring what is missing and replicating a healthy brain. That truth, well researched in this book, needs to be told.After reading "Anatomy of an Epidemic" two years ago, I was convinced that I at least needed to try life without medications. My husband is a physician, and he found the research in the book compelling as well. I did a very slow, careful taper off of my psych drugs, over a period of months (this part is absolutely crucial). The side effects of withdrawing were physically painful at times, but I got through them. I've been off psychiatric medication for over a year and a half, and I feel really good.Do I still get depressed? Yes, sometimes I do. But certainly not more depressed than I did on the medications. I really appreciate having the full range of my emotional reactions restored to me. It's dreary having the ecstatic side of life chopped off, along with the abject misery. Drugs do that. And psychiatric medications have frightening long-term consequences, some of which are only coming to light now that people have been on them for decades. If medications are truly needed, in most cases they should be temporary, not long-term.Life is hard, stress is real, and problems need to be dealt with. There is no magic bullet. I have found daily aerobic exercise to be a far more reliable way of mitigating depression than my former medications, and research in this book shows this to be true for a majority of people as well. Mindfulness meditation has also helped, and kind people who listen to me.I don't blame my doctors for my years of overmedication. They were doing the best they knew how for me, given the way that training is passed down doctor-to-doctor through medical education. The "medical model" of psychiatry saved that branch of medicine from dying out, given our insurance-based healthcare system, and Robert Whitaker does a great job of exposing the collusion between the pharmaceutical companies and the American Psychiatric Association, with its frightening consequences. I found the section of the book describing the way research evidence was "rewritten" for medical school textbooks truly alarming.There's a lot at stake here for the psychiatric profession; it's not surprising that so many psychiatrists turn from this research with alarm and denial. I admire Robert Whitaker for bringing this problem to light, and for doggedly pursuing it both in the US and internationally. I recommend his website "Mad in America" for recent news and discussion.

This was an exciting conclusion to this series - I could barely put it down. The action comes fast and furious as Jed tries to help survivors in Texas...Telling you about the story would ruin your enjoyment when you read it, so I will not say anything! However, you will enjoy reading about Jed and how he has grown into a leadership role. The fight isn't about the Variants but now about how different people react in such situations - and how inhuman they become.If you loved Nicholas Sansbury Smith's Extinction Cycle series, you will enjoy A. J. Sikes take on the back stories of characters we had met... The author remains true to the original story but adds more dimension to characters we had met briefly. His voice adds more to the series as it is a series you hate to see end!The characters are well developed, and the action comes fast... and you won't see what's coming!

I feel that this is a excellent addition to the 'Extinction Cycle' series that Mr. Smith has written.Two years after New York City, Jed Welch has managed to fexcape and find his way to Galveston island in TX. He was discharged and disgraced so the leadership role he now has with a platoon is his....and only his. Will he be able to maintain order and discipline in his platoon?SGT Welch (yes, he has been promoted!) and his squad is on the hunt for a saboteur. Fast and furious action ensues and it is guaranteed to raise your blood pressure. Just incredible scenes unfold within these pages.For me. in addition to the excellent plot and the well-developed characters, this story is a superlative study in human behavior. Certain events can trigger the best and the worst in people. And, I feel this author has his finger firmly on that which makes individuals 'tick'....Certainly a most welcome addition to the 'Extinction Cycle' series and am glad that I read this one.Most highly recommended and for the multiple reasons mentioned above.

I love this series set in the Extinction Cycle world! This is a fitting conclusion to the series. Lots of action, fast paced, and excellent story telling. A must read for Extinction Cycle fans!

The ending absolutely did not disappoint. I really love this 3 book addition to the Extinction Cycle series and was rooting for Jed and crew till the end. If you love Extinction Cycle you really need to read these books. They are full of fast paced action and thrills. Hoping to hear more of our heroes in the future.

Fabulous finish to a well-crafted trilogy. Plenty of action and surprises. Loved it!

This is one of the most clear and down to earth books on biblical last day signs that I have read so far. The book is so informative with facts and bible references, that it leaves you with a sense of, yep how true! and not a sense of, uh maybe. It even sealed for me my ministry outside of church. I have been praying to the Lord to show me how I could reach out to others and share the word. Purchasing bibles and leaving them where people can easily get them is perfect for me. I am not so good with the one on one approach, so this is perfect for me. Thank you Michael Sawdy. May the Lord continue to bless you in your ministry. He is using you mightily. Donâ€™t ever stop, because Jesus is really truly about to appear!!!

At some point in the late 60s and early 70s a handful of young wargaming geeks in Wisconsin and Minnesota - almost by accident - found a new way to create and explore imaginary worlds, realities and lives. It was like nothing they'd experienced before, bringing pleasures and excitements far beyond anything people normally associated with "gaming." In a few short years, this new immersive fantasy experience spread from these tiny local wargame clubs to become an international phenomenon that changed the world.Playing at the World is a study of the creation of Dungeons & Dragons (first published in 1974), and the birth of fantasy role-playing games. Like a methodical archaeologist, Peterson painstakingly uncovers D&D's origins in the theory and subculture of wargaming, in fantasy literature and fandom, and in the wider social context and subcultures of 1960s-70s America. For anyone interested in role-playing games (as a cultural phenomenon and as a narrative/world-simulation form), this book is an inexhaustible treasure trove of information and insights. The depth of Peterson's research is extraordinary and his prose style is confident and enjoyable (and the presentation, editing and design prove that self-publishing is no barrier to absolute professionalism). It's true that some casual readers may be put off by the (deliciously nerdy) comprehensiveness (Peterson is determined to identify and analyse every conceivable source for and influence on D&D's development), but for someone genuinely fascinated by the subject, that is merely another of the book's many pleasures.But looking beyond the breadth and detail, there are plenty of important larger themes here, which Peterson does a better job of exploring than almost anyone else I've read on the topic. I've long felt that the rise of Dungeons & Dragons was a significant turning point in the culture: a shift in the content, structure and uses of fiction. D&D coalesced various emerging trends and brought them together to provide an imaginary experience that was immersive, exploratory and interactive - in effect providing a template for many of the wider cultural developments since. It offered a new kind of relationship to fictional stories and realities, one that I often think has come to dominate the contemporary world.Peterson sees this too, and underlying much of this book is his search for a deeper understanding of what made such a shift possible and of what it might mean. He undertakes that search not by making sweeping generalisations or launching into academic cultural theory, but by methodically and fastidiously sifting through the detail: who said, wrote and did what when? And why? What did this mean to the people involved at the time? How was all this shaped by the context (both at the micro level of the Lake Geneva and Twin Cities wargaming scene of the early 70s, and also at the macro level of 1970s America)? Along the way - often in very quiet, subtle ways - Peterson draws out some rich and intriguing connections, resonances, meanings. I love this kind of historiography, where broad themes and profound insights emerge out of a careful nuanced reading of complex concrete factual details. It sometimes demands a degree of patient effort on the part of the reader but the rewards can be tremendous.Add to that the pleasures of nostalgia (of which there's plenty to be enjoyed here) and personal drama (albeit less than some might like, thanks to Peterson's determination to be judicious and fair and avoid gossip), and Playing at the World is one of the most satisfying books I've read in a while. It was clearly an enormous task, and I'm very grateful to Peterson for what he has achieved. There will be more books by other authors on the invention of D&D, and there will be many more insights and pleasures to be enjoyed. I was one of the many young people who began playing Dungeons and Dragons during the initial 1979-1982 heyday and I thought it might be interesting to take aon adults eye view of a hobby that I thoroughly enjoyed as an adolescent. Indeed I did get that. But I think this book is much more. Its an intensely micro-level view of a true intellectual breakthrough.D&D was built on a foundation of many influences, but at the same time a true innovation greater than the sum of its parts. Peterson has made an exhaustive effort to disentangle all of the varied influences (fantasy & sci-fi, military wargaming, board-gaming, role playing psychology, strategy etc.) to convincingly identify the unique breakthrough. The true new thing developed in Dave Arneson's Blackmoor campaign was an open ended game based on each player building and advancing a character to identify with in repeated play. This character building element had not been done before and made gaming attractive to a much broader audience than serious gaming previously had. This aspect has appealed to millions of games and probably tens of millions in all of the various computer games that use this format.One of the great parts of this book was it demonstrated how important the local community of gamers in St. Paul and Lake Geneva was toward the development of the campaign. The book illustrates the parallel development of like games in the UK which was retarded by the absence of a necessary critical mass of players.

There's been a lot of talk about this book recently, so I checked it out... and I'm glad I did! If you're at all curious, I recommend downloading the free Kindle sample because it's easily 200 pages of reading for free. My guess is that it'll convince you to buy the full book- it's simply an amazing release. Meticulously researched, fascinating and unbiased, this has been my favorite read of the past few years, no exaggeration.Peterson lays out the origins of the hobby in exhaustive detail, while keeping it interesting and fresh through hundreds of pages. He covers pretty much every angle you could ask for: early wargaming history, rules iterations, popular fiction influences, you name it. For me, the most pleasant surprise was how interesting each and every topic was, as presented by Peterson. I have never been much interested in pulp fiction from the 50s, nor did I ever think I would care about hundred-year-old Prussian war simulations. And yet, the author writes about it all with such fervor and ecstatic detail, you can't help but get sucked in and fascinated.The only reservation I have is that the physical copy is quite unwieldy: it's a massive brick of text and the layout could have been much cleaner. I found the large page size and tiny margins to be a bit imposing, and the Kindle version was a lot easier on the eyes. But I feel guilty even mentioning this, because the actual content is so far past amazing that it's worth the eyestrain, I promise. I seriously cannot recommend this book enough.

If this topic interests you this is a must-read.Peterson does an excellent job creating a narrative from the scattered sources of the era. There are plenty of details, but the history moves along well. Several sections build the background for the tale (wargaming since Wells, fantasy fiction since Poe, etc.) and even though I think myself well informed on these topics I still savored new facts and marveled at how the histories intertwine.The specifics of the evolution of D&D and why it happened in Lake Geneva were new to me and fascinating. Several personalities stand out and Peterson does well to present all sides. A good history makes you want to be there to see it happen and I wish I had been, probably the only time I've ever wanted to revisit the '70s.This is a truly unique episode that might easily have disappeared in time. My thanks to the author for making sure it is recorded fairly and well.
