Shojo Fashion Manga Art School: How to Draw Cool Looks and Characters, by Irene Flores

From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up—Flores explains how to create characters with a manga flair. Through black-and-white and color artwork, she provides the basics of figure drawing, specifically teenaged characters. Step-by-step instruction includes heads, facial features, and bodies. Posing and settings are briefly covered. The illustrations incorporate blue pencils for the initial sketches, then finishing with detailed pencils and inks. The premise is that an understanding of human anatomy is key to good character design, and essential for drawing attire. Half of the book is devoted to drawing garments, starting with folds, then pieces of clothing. The underlying body, sketched in blue or red, shows how it affects the shape of what the person is wearing. Characters sport trendy, but not otherworldly, outfits. Absent are the magical girls and costumed ninjas. The author's approach is that with a few variations on the standard figure, you can make your character design "mangalike." Chris Hart'sManga Mania Romance: Drawing Shojo Girls and Bishie Boys (Sixth & Spring, 2008) and Colleen Doran's Girl to Grrrl Manga: How to Draw the Hottest Shoujo Manga (Impact, 2007) provide wider and deeper coverage of art techniques, special effects, and other conventions distinctive to Japanese manga.—June Shimonishi, Torrance Public Library, CA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. "Good for any age group as it's not text heavy, [and is] well written. I must say that this book is one of the nicer drawn and laid out Western How to Draw Manga books out there. Pick it up if you're into this subject and need a decent drawing book. It's one book I doubt will ever become out of print." --Manga Tutorials"This guide contains everything you need to know to create fabulous shojo manga characters with personality." --Arts Book Mix

*If you have Prime, you can borrow this book so you can read through it before you purchase!*This book is well written, and has a slightly humorous bent to it. It is suitable for any level of artist, including young beginners who are looking to master the basics of drawing the human form. There are many areas covered, such as how to draw feet, hands and other parts with better accuracy and detail. Basic descriptions of why those details matter are also covered in the book. A lot of great examples are given, such as the fundamental parts of how to make any scene or character really come alive. It encourages drawing better perspective to get more realism, as well as breaking down the scene to each section in order to make all of the details to scale. However, if you want a step by step set of instructions for everything, this book does not really offer them.It displays well on the Kindle Touch, but looks best in a larger format, such as a tablet. For those who like to use these books as a reference, a tablet can make it easier to zoom in on a section, or see it in finer detail (or in color) when working on a particular character or scene. I have also tested it on the Kindle W/Keyboard series and it looks just "ok" - a little more dim than the Kindle Touch.Other Notes:The book is not terribly long, but is not as short as some of the other Manga books I have read, making it a good value for the money. That said, I do not think I would have purchased it as a paperback, but the Kindle price is just right.

This is an excellent book from the beginner to the advanced. I was surprised that it turned out to be as excellent as it was. While this book does assume you have some experience drawing (That you have attempted to draw people before, even if they turned out awful). It gives you pointers and things to keep in mind when attempting to draw them. Don't skimp on the practicing, as it does work! The best section by far is the detail spent on clothing. I, myself, have a lot of problems drawing clothes and this book gave me an excellent idea of how clothing should look, lay, and work with the character.I found that with this book and Girl to Grrrl manga by Colleen Doran, that all my other how to draw manga books make a bit more sense as well as become easier to understand. Girl to Grrl manga and Shojo Fashion break down the basics to help you understand how draw not only the basic character, but facial expressions, as well as different styles. They also focus on body structure and proportion, which nessc. for any beginning artist.

I received this order relatively fast from Amazon, very happy with that. Love the book over all, glad they let you preview a few pages on this site - it was really what pulled me in to buy the book.Love the character designs in this book, very modern and not so 80's like most How-To mangas from Japan (so many just seem a little dated). I really enjoyed the artist's personal style. The only complaint I have about this book is that there are not many ideas for guys. Sure I know, a girl's wardrobe is far more extensive than the average guys wardrobe, but I was hoping for some ideas for modern guy clothing anyway. Everything from examples of the hair to accessories where based on things you could draw for females. I just felt that aspect of the book was a little unbalanced. As a female, I want to draw good looking guys to go with my stylish girls!Other than that the examples are really great, and the walk through of manga anatomy with quick explanations were wonderful. I was considering giving this one a 4-star rating, but despite my one complaint, I love everything about this book. So 5-stars it is - I would definitely recommend. Right after I flipped through the book I got out a sketch book and jotted down some ideas - that is a good how-to book in my opinion; it makes you excited to draw.

The cover of this book is very deceiving. At first glance you'd think it was a typical how-to book, but it's honestly a lot more than that. I'm an experienced artist so that should be kept in mind during my review. Without further ado, let's get started. Before I get into the contents of the book itself, I'm going to do a small review on the art style. This isn't your "typical manga style" It's very unique and really fun to look at. While it might not be everyone's cup of tea, it doesn't affect how this book can teach you.The first couple pages go over basic art supplies. It's a basic beginning to any how-to book, but this artist shows you that you don't really need any big fancy equipment to draw well. That's something that I wish a lot more books would tell you, beginning artists tend to be overwhelmed by supplies or are misled to think that better supplies make you a better artist (which is not true). This artist goes over general art supplies such as pencils, pens, recommended erasers and paper, as well as brush pens. There are then two pages on line weight which despite being such a small section has lots of nice little tips that would REALLY help out a beginning artist and even remind some of us more experienced artists.Following those two pages is yet another two pages with this particular artist's basic digital coloring process. A nice little addition, but not particularly an important part of this book. It felt a little like filler to me, but if nothing else, it's a cute pose reference. Now we start getting into the actual meat of the book. It starts to loosely go over basic human anatomy (the differences between males and females, legs, hands, feet, a small body type comparison, a bit of posing, some perspective)Then it moves on to how to draw faces, eyes, noses, mouths and ears. Then it goes over some basic expressions and their progressions. It then goes through adding hair (with a nice little braid tutorial) and some different hair colors. All very nice little bits to help add some more personality to your characters. However, this isn't what the book is about (as you can tell by the title). Now at page 59 we start on what makes this book very unique, clothing. It starts out by teaching you about various fabric types including: stiff fabric, draping fabric, silks, short fur, long fur, corduroy, leather, vinyl, and rubber. While this isn't a big section, it does give useful tips on how to make fabric look different with the strokes of a pen or pencil. Something that any artist can learn from. It then goes over different styles of shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts, coats, and blazers. While these aren't step-by-step, they do make for good references and the artist gives little tips along the way. There's then a small step-by-step of quilted and puffy fabric that even more experienced artists can learn from. The book now moves onto different styles of pants, shorts, skirts, and swimwear. There aren't many step-by-steps here either, but plenty of tips and references. We then move onto frilly and formal dresses (with a thrown in guide on lace that anyone can follow). Dresses are only touched on in this book, BUT in the second book there's a lot more (I'll be reviewing that book as well.)We now move onto accessories such as hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, socks, slippers, sandals, sneakers, heels, and boots. A really nice part is that the shoes actually have step-by-step instructions. Feet and shoes are really difficult for beginning artists, and even experienced artists such as myself can struggle with these. The little tips and tricks included are very helpful. It goes over purses, bags, jewelry, and glasses next. There's even a page on drawing umbrellas (which are seen all the time in manga.)By now we're on page 99, and nearing the end of the book. This last section goes over a few basic "stereotypical" school kids. It's a cute little addition that teaches you how to add some differences between your characters. In this section there are also a couple step-by-step guides on drawing these characters interacting. The last few pages of the book go over some perspective with backgrounds and some nice little tips on making scenes to put your now fashionable characters in.Final Words-This is a really fantastic book overall with plenty of great tips and absolutely amazing references. The art style is unique, and I love it, if it puts you off though, DON'T WORRY. The style does NOT hinder your ability to learn what this book is really trying to teach you. While I do think a beginner would benefit from this book, it will NOT teach you how to draw human bodies for the most part. Start out with something more general that will break down human anatomy for you, then move onto this book to help make your characters more unique and fashionable. This book does have a bit more female fashion than male fashion, but overall it's nothing that should turn you away from it. If you're the kind of person that struggles with giving your characters different and unique clothing, this book will help you 100%. It does not include a section for undergarments however.I easily recommend this book for anyone's collection.

"The House of Djinn" brings to a close the trilogy begun in "Shabanu, Daughter of the Wind", a Newbery Honor Book. I found all three books a fascinating glimpse into a culture and world that was totally unfamiliar to me. Although the books are fiction, the author states that the stories are based on actual interviews with women from the Pakistan region. "The House of Djinn" tells the story of Shabanu's daughter "Muti" as ancient traditions collide with modern ideas regarding a woman's role. One is left hanging about Shabanu's future, but there is hope that this independent, resourceful "daughter of the wind" will make her own way to happiness, as she always has.I would recommend this book for young people as well as adults. The story is well told and moves along at a fast clip.

A very magic realism-esque take on the dichotomy of being Pakistani and American. I like Mumtaz as a character more than shabanu, as she seems somehow more grounded. The whole Chloe plotline was very heavy handed tho, and detracted from the overall plot.

When reading this book, I felt as if its relation to the first book in the trilogy (the Newberry Award-winning "Shabanu") was something like the relationship of "Scarlett" to "Gone With the Wind." Whereas the first two (wonderful!) books focus on Shabanu and the intricacies of life in Pakistan and Pakistani society, "The House of Djinn" bounces its focus to Mumtaz and the heretofore unknown Jameel, while Shabanu herself appears barely twice. While the first two books are rich with detail on the landscape, cities, rituals, and intrigue, this book jumps clumsily from scene to scene, name-dropping skateboard tricks.I remember being left on the edge of my seat when "Haveli" ended, and after growing impatient with years of waiting for a resolution, visiting the author's website and discovering that she had never planned to write a third book at all. This felt akin to Tolkien's simply ending his books at the Two Towers with "Frodo was alive, and taken by the enemy." I was horrified. I couldn't have been happier when she decided to write this book to resolve those missing questions. Alas, the book is so rushed and thin on detail that it's almost as if it was written by someone else. It does NOT read like the grandchild of the Newberry Award-winning "Shabanu." I didn't connect with a single character in the book, even the ones I'd liked before. I'm bitterly disappointed...she resolved the issues only technically, as if saying "here's your book, now leave me alone."A final thought: this is the fourth book I've read by Suzanne Fisher Staples, and I've come to notice that every single one of them (the Shabanu trilogy and "Shiva's Fire") seem to end right in the middle of the climax. While open endings are appropriate for some stories, after a while it starts to feel lazy. Finishing her books with no sense of closure is jarring.Enjoy "Shabanu" and "Haveli," but stop there.

Shabanu and Haveli have had far more effort and time devoted to storytelling than this book. This was a disappointment.

This is the third book in this trilogy. It's story about life in Pakistan as a young girl in a traditional household is disturbing with undertones of hope for the future. It's not an easy read but is well worth it.

The original book is better; however you feel for the situation of young people from different cultures who are raised in America.

Beautiful. Shabanu, Haveli, and now The House of Djinn. Absolutely beautiful. Each one transports you. I couldn't put this book down and ended up reading it straight through. Strongly recommend this book.

This book is great for a beginner. It is simple, not lots of gratuitously complicated terminology like some books and shows you the basics of technique and form. I'm not an idiot, I'm a grad student for heaven's sake, but when I'm new at something I want to be started gently and not scared off by too much history and having to learn a whole new vocabulary. This was perfect. I was able to create this little cat like the one on the cover on my first try! Now I've moved on to coming up with my own animals and experimenting with color. Thank you for the inspiration and instruction Ms. Horvath!

I am new to needle felting. The cat I made and included a picture for was my second project. I feel that it had easy, clear to understand directions, with pictures of every step. A lot of nice pictures of completed designs as well. I think it is a great stepping stone for beginners, though if you have more experience it might be too basic with techniques you already know. If you like the looks of the designs though I say go for it.If you have trouble with needle felting after reading the instructions in this book, I would suggest watching youtube as sometimes it takes seeing someone else do it to make things really click in your head. I would recommend user Maqaroon among others.

I had never done needle felting before, but love to work with fabrics and sculpt dolls from polymer clay. I used tips from this book and the book, "Felt Dogs" by Mitsuki Hoshi. I did a little 3-d portrait of my mini schnauzer with her butt up and head down, (her "I wanna play" pose), and am quite pleased with my first attempt. Last night I almost gave up but this morning I fixed it. Between the two books I did it! Its fun to learn how to do something new at the age of 60. I do need to learn to hold the needles straight as I broke every needle I bought. I only stabbed myself twice, though.

Lately, I've been researching various crafts and hobbies to learn what is involved in them. Finding helpful information for beginning needle felting proved to be a bit more of a challenge than originally expected. Fortunately, Amazon offers interesting collection of sellers who provide products for needle felting, and a few do have some items to guide the absolute beginner. I happened upon this book, and it looked quite friendly, so I purchased it hoping it would give me insight into the craft... something besides twee flowers and appliqué for clothing, something closer to sculpting with wool rather than flat design. I also wanted something that described basic tools, materials, and techniques. I wanted Needle Felting 101! :) And I got it with this purchase!I was pleasantly surprised. This book was much better than expected--and yes, it works best for beginners (responsible, mature teens to adults) and for those who want to work in miniature. Those with advanced needle felting skills may prefer more challenging projects like Silver Penny's "Needle Felted Wizard" or other larger, holiday characters. Needle felters who are into more "realistic looking" animal styles may not enjoy this book. // The clues for the content are really on the book's cover: "LITTLE Felted Animals: Create 16 Irresistible Creatures with SIMPLE Needle-Felting Techniques." The operative words here are "little" and "simple."For a beginner, this book offers an excellent collection of starter projects that can foster tool appreciation, build skills, and spark creativity, providing that the person is willing to spend time with the book and practicing shaping. [I've discovered that needle felting is not a craft for the hurried, frazzled, irritable, or impatient! LOL :) ]The Book's Sections...Supplies & Tips: For me, this was worth the price of the book. At last, here was a source that not only explained what was involved in basic needle felting, it showed the needed items in very clear, well-planned photographs (Tools & Wool Roving Color Palette). There was also a little lesson on how to add glass eyes to felted pets. The Projects of this book are well illustrated also, and they give the beginner a fighting chance at making a fairly decent product the first go around--if one follows the steps and pictures carefully. [Remember that all craft making goes though an ugly stage where you look at your creation and cringe! The trick is to keep moving forward pass that feeling and moment; don't censor yourself too early in your felting attempts or projects. Needle felting is a total process from start to finish, and this book clearly teaches that concept. You cannot learn or improve if you give up. So, don't give up! Give yourself permission to experiment and to make mistakes. ]The Primer Part in Process & Shaping...This sections teaches the learner to start visualizing shapes in wool and how they can be combined to form bodies.Shaping A Black BirdShaping A Short-legged Animal / BunnyShaping a Long-Legged Animal / CatThe Projects... Great photos and helpful instructions!Penguin / Polar Bear/ Baby Seal / Blackbird / Bunny / Chartreux Cat / Welsh Corgi / Koola Bear / Turkish Van Cat / Robin / Brown Bear / Fox / Mice / Sheep / Dalmatian / Jack Russell Terrier /Making felted animals is a fun way to spend a rainy, cold afternoon.MORE NOTES: Because needle felting requires the use of sharp needles and coordination, these type crafts (and perhaps even the resulting products that have glass eyes) are not meant for very young children. Update: As other reviewers have suggested, and I agree with them, people who learn best by "seeing it done" rather than just "reading how its done" might want to use some supplementary "video / audio" materials in addition to this book. Video lessons allow viewers to see how felters hold and move the needle to achieve shapes. However, there is no substitute for just getting in there are trying it yourself. You learn a lot in your first project believe me--what to do and what not to do. :) The Silver Penny website does offer some video / image help for beginners. To get there from here, just Google this: "The Silver Penny" and needle felting. In your search, you should see something like this: Needle Felting Tips and Techniques - The Silver Penny.People who are totally new to felting might enjoy this product in addition to the "Little Felted Animals" book: Felting Needle Starter Kit. At this writing, this kit is available on Amazon! :)

I am just a beginner and tried the bird as my first project. There could have been a little more detail on the how to's. My bird came out quite skinny, but I kept adding more wool and finally got a presentable project. The beak, though was another story. Too tiny to work without more hints about how to go about it. I had a lot of fun though, and I think it is just a matter of practice, practice, practice. Flat felting was quite easy, but I had to go right into the more difficult stuff. I do think anyone will enjoy this book, but maybe do some flat stuff before diving in to 3D. If you are like me though, GO FOR IT!

I wouldn't say this book is good for beginners. You do need to have some basic felting knowhow. There are drawings to show how big to make the basic shapes. The animals are smaller then in some of the other books I have but once you know the basic you can adjust or you could scan them to adjust the size. There isn't a lot of detail to the projects so if you want more detail you will need to look for pictures in books or on the net.

Little Felted Animals gives step-by-step instructions for creating small animals from wool roving. The book lists all materials including the colors and quantities of roving needed for each animal. All of the illustrations from body type patterns to the finished projects are shown actual size reducing guesswork about proportions and the chance of wasted materials (which are expensive). Although I haven't tried to make one yet, the explicit instructions make the projects look do-able and the simplicity of the beginning structures seem to be easily adapted to other types of animals not specified in the book. I can't wait to try one!

Animals look adorable. Has complete step-by-step instructions in the beginning for basics then generals for the animals as you go. Hoping it will be beneficial as I haven't yet started this new hobby. I think the Adorable Felted Animals book might prove to be a better aid as it has more detail.

I felt pretty conflicted giving this only three stars, as I've been a supporter of Motojitsu on Youtube and Patreon for a while, and am a huge fan of Fast Eddie and what he does, and I honestly believe he has a good program. That said, I think the book (more of a booklet, really, only 30 pages including the covers) itself could've been better, so here goes. The good: The exercises contained in the booklet are great, and give you a clear path of progression to follow. As I mentioned, the program the author has developed is very solid and a very good way to improve your riding skills, and the diagrams are handy and well-illustrated.The bad: Everything in this booklet other than the foreword by Lee Parks and the diagrams for the drills is already out there in the wild for free. Visit the Motojitsu website and Youtube channel, it's all there, and it's presented well there. This in and of itself wouldn't be bad, as having all the information in one physical place in a book would still be worthwhile, if it weren't for...The ugly: The booklet is not a self-sufficient resource. Rather than including advice on the exercises, advice setting up the exercises, advice on gaining the skills to do the exercises, or really any of the other great information that the author has already put out there, the booklet includes setup diagrams for the various drills and exercises and then points you to those free resources I already mentioned for everything else. The text refers you to Youtube videos and playlists that the author has created, rather than explaining it within the text. All that to say: if what you want is a booklet to carry around with you and help you remember the exercises, or a gateway to introduce people to Motojitsu, this is it. If you've already been following the author's content for a while (like me) and were hoping for something new, or you're hoping for a compendium of the author's knowledge and advice in one place, consider skipping the book. If you're new to Motojitsu and don't feel the need for a physical copy of the exercise diagrams, just visit the Motojitsu website and Youtube channel and get all that goodness for free. It really is a worthwhile program to follow, and Fast Eddie is a worthwhile guy to listen to, but make sure you have the right expectations before buying the book, and be ready to hit up his channel either way.

There are many great motorcycle riders and many great instructors. There are many great books on motorcycle riding techniques. Motorcycle handling skills is a topic that is well covered with numerous options to study about safety, suspension, track riding techniques and pretty much every other aspect of riding you could think to write about.Once in a while though, a true innovator comes along and shakes things up and gives us an opportunity to see thing from a new angle. Fast Eddie has done exactly that! One area where there has been a distinct lack of coverage is through the murky (and often dangerous) path from being a beginner to being a capable and confident motorcycle rider. There are LOTS of bad pieces of advice floating around about how to best gain skill and experience riding. A lot of riders don't get a chance to fill up their skill bucket before their luck bucket runs dry. They head out onto the open road and into traffic before they have the necessary skills to survive there. So how you get better without crashing or seriously injuring yourself in the process? Fast Eddie has provided a solution to this problem and has illuminated that path.By modeling his motorcycle skill progression system similarly to a martial arts belt system, the student is able to approach learning using an informed, structured, methodical, and measurable format. No guesswork, no wondering if you're practicing the correct skill. The drills are easy to understand and easy to set up anywhere you can find an open parking lot with good traction. This system is not only for new riders. Using this system, anyone who wants to increase their skill and safety on their motorcycle will "harvest the most meat" per hour of practice than any other method I'm aware of. This book isn't a substitute for taking courses. It is a system for honing your technique and building the instincts necessary to react correctly when your life depends on it...and if you're riding motorcycles in traffic...that moment will find you whether you've prepared yourself or not."I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times." -Bruce LeeNo more excuses. Buy this book. Shut up and practice!

It's a paid advertisement for his YouTube channel. There is no real instruction in this phamplet that I wasted money on. Every page has some basic diagrams and a URL to his videos. What a joke after this forget it I won't be supporting Greg or his BS any longer there are other teachers out there that aren't trying to scam their fans into buying advertisements. Don't waste your money just go to his YouTube channel and find the exact same info in far far far more depth for free. Or check out Motovudu by world class racer Simon Crayfar

The creator of this program is the real deal people. The foreward by Lee Parks says it all.Greg is a master rider who understands the dire need for practice to perfect riding ability. This man is completely dedicated to the art and shares his skill and teaching ability with the world!Motojitsu is a simple yet challenging approach to conquering your fear of the bike and transforming you into a skillful rider. In addition to formal riding courses, you too can aspire to master the art.Consider this book a field guide for adding needed structure to practice. This is an easy to carry reference that is straight to the point. There are much larger and in depth books out there such as Total Control 2, however they are too large and packed with information to be effective when you're setting up a cone pattern to maneuver. The simplicity of the program is key in the field. From beginner to Rossi, this book is for you!

Hannibal, by Patrick N Hunt

Review

“Patrick Hunt's Hannibal is a rare combination of impeccable scholarship and good writing.  Knowing what the author knows, this biography could have been 900 pages long; instead it hits the scales at below 300, the perfect fighting weight for one of history's most lethal combatants.”  (Robert L. O’Connell, author of The Ghosts of Cannae)"The book is particularly illuminating in discussing Hannibal’s famous crossing of the Alps in 218 B.C. . . . Hunt excels in his descriptions of battles.” (Thomas E. Ricks The New York Times Book Review)"An exciting biography of one of history's greatest commanders. . . . A thrilling page-turner about one of history's most brilliant strategists and tacticians."  (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“Patrick Hunt is one of the world’s greatest experts on Hannibal. He brings that magnificent commander to life, with verve and in detail, in this wonderful book. Hannibal is must reading for all students of military history.” (Barry Strauss, Cornell University, author of The Death of Caesar: The Story of History’s Most Famous Assassination)“From opening anecdote to closing argument, Hunt’s biography engages fully with both Hannibal the legend and Hannibal the man—telling us what can and should be known about the man while acknowledging the ambiguities and contradictions of the legend. Was Hannibal a military genius or a lucky gambler, a self-propelled comet or the instrument of fate, a figure of terror or of pathos? All of these, and much more.” (Steven Saylor, author of the New York Times bestseller Roma: The Novel of Ancient Rome)"Even after the passage of more than two thousand years, Hannibal’s bold exploits, above all in Italy, challenging Rome to a duel in her own back yard, capture the imagination. Patrick Hunt, who has for decades been researching Hannibal, including much personal fieldwork on the ground retracing Hannibal’s footsteps, distills a lifetime’s knowledge and experience in this lively and compelling narrative." (Professor Roger J. A. Wilson, director, Centre for the Study of Ancient Sicily, University of British Columbia)“Hannibal relates the famous general’s story with wonderful energy. . . . Archeologist and historian Patrick Hunt distills his survey of literature about the Second Punic War into a brightly dramatic story that covers virtually every anecdote connected with Hannibal.” (The Christian Science Monitor)"Hannibal, thoroughly researched and written in an engaging style, tells the story of this remarkable military strategist.  Over the past 25 years, Patrick Hunt has walked every battlefield and trekked over 30 of the probable Alps passes that Hannibal may have used. . . . The reader is treated to a ‘you are there,’ action-packed historical adventure." (Major General Robert B. Ostenberg, U.S. Army (Ret.))“The military history is thorough and balanced. . . . Drawing on both ancient and modern scholarship, this book is accessible for the nonspecialist; military history buffs will enjoy.” (Library Journal)“The flourishes that make Hunt a popular on-air personality shine through. . . . . Hunt’s story of the doomed general, whose exploits are more celebrated than those of his vanquishers, will appeal to any reader interested in military history or strategy.” (Publishers Weekly)

As Patrick Hunt tells us in the preface to this engaging work, he has spent much of his life researching the enigma that is Hannibal Barca. Now this overriding interest has led Hunt to write a very informative, wide-ranging biography of the famous general. This is a book that makes clear why Hannibal is rightfully considered one of the greatest military figures in history, but it is also a well-balanced volume that avoids hagiography. And while it will certainly please an academic audience, the book is free of academic dryness, avoiding jargon and handling complex concepts in a readable manner. It manages to be suspenseful even when one is already familiar with the events of the general’s life—and that is no easy trick.Hunt is quite skillful in weaving together the various factors that shaped Hannibal’s success and failure, including the startling brilliance of his military mind, the influence of his father, and the political environment of Carthage with its dubious support of the general’s efforts. Hunt is very solid at explaining the faulty tactics—and later brilliance—of the Romans (especially seen in Fabius Maximus and Scipio Africanus). Finally, there is Hannibal’s considerable logistic and administrative skill, a factor often overlooked but which Hunt covers wonderfully. But for all his acumen, Hannibal ultimately failed, and it is this failure that has made him an enigma: His ability to adapt to changing circumstances had been almost wondrous at times—as Hunt makes very clear—but Hannibal seems to have lost something of that ability after his greatest success, Cannae. And here lies the famous multi-faceted question: should Hannibal have invaded Rome? Hunt discusses this question in a very nice, concise way and then goes on to explore an unhappy issue: Was Hannibal incapable of adjusting to what had become the new “game plan” of the Romans? They refused to fight him on his own terms, and they adopted the tactics he had used against them. Hunt explores this topic unsparingly and illuminates how the limitless resources and determination of Rome likely made Hannibal’s mission in southern Italy an inevitable failure. Very highly recommended.

A fantastic read for anyone interested in history, Hannibal, and the Punic Wars. I particularly enjoyed the attention to detail regarding topography, the numbers and background of the troops involved in various campaigns, and the overarching social history as Punic and Roman civilizations clashed throughout the narrative. This book does an excellent job of peeling back some of the hidden layers on Hannibal himself, a truly enigmatic character who would’ve stood out as an extraordinary individual in any era. The author’s use of sources such as Polybius and Livy is particularly fascinating when used in conjunction with known facts from the actual battle sites, such as the terrain and climate conditions. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in ancient history or someone who simply loves a good factual story that is well told.

A fascinating and very accessible history of Hannibal and his battles against the Romans. Hunt clearly knows his stuff and separates as much as possible the real from the myths, explaining why he reaches his conclusion without all the academic clutter that impedes most histories. Its clear, concise and persuasive.

This book is a very strong biography of Hannibal’s life and times. It is easy to read and clearly written. It focuses on both his life and the lives of those around him - though mostly his enemies and a few of his fellow generals. However, I found it focused more on his movements and battles, which were clearly articulated, and less on the man himself. Would have liked more on his lifestyle, his family and relationships around him. For example, the book does not explore his other generals or comrades except for out, inning their positions in battle. Also, the book could have benefitted from more detailed maps for some of his Italian movements and battles.Overall a very good read to understand Hannibal and his exploits in Europe.

I like it because the author presents the historical context for Hannibal's campaign in Italy. The book would have been better if there were additional diagrams of the various battles and maps showing Hannibal's possible / probable routes from Spain through the Alps into Italy and the many battle fields. The book provides an outstanding discussion on why Hannibal did not directly attack the city of Rome. It also presents Hannibal's campaign as one historical example when one side wins almost every battle but still does not win the war.

Well written. It was entertaining and I hope it was historically correct. Hannibal was an incredible man and I was delighted with the way the author treated him.

The legacy of Carthinian General Hannibal Barca is brought to life in this shockingly graphic and detailed account. His military tactics revolutionalized warfare and still seem remarkable to this day. An exciting read from start to finish!
