This was a read-aloud, listen-to book for my homeschooled 2nd grade granddaughter during a unit study on the United Kingdom. She has thoroughly enjoyed the stories. She was attentive, asked questions, and interacted in guided discussions. As the designated storyteller, I too, enjoyed the stories. This is a gentle, yet scholarly approach to teaching history to any student. We also were able to consider the lifestyles, cultures, and beliefs of people from long ago.
As an American who went to public school, I feel like I totally missed out on British/English history. I m reading through this with my 7 and 5 year-old girls (1st and 2nd grade) as part of our Charlotte Mason curriculum (Ambleside Online) and we are all absolutely loving it! The stories are exciting and interesting, and written at a level that doesn't talk town to the reader, but yet is accessible to a younger child, provided that the adult reading is willing and able to explain a few things from time to time. My girls beg me to do their history reading, and I couldn't ask for better.We highly recommend it!
I have learned more from this book than in any of my classes as a kid. We are now using this as part of our home school curriculum and my kids beg to continue the story. I love that some legends and tales are fitted in with facts, as legends and tales were so important long ago and are forgotten and sterilized in today's histories.
I bought the Kindle edition. This is a nice little brief summary of the history of England and all it's kings and queens. It is well written and entertaining and serves as a good outline of the history of England. However, it is not necessarily accurate since it doesn't go into very much detail and paints broad moral judgments of the monarchs who are more complex than these brief summaries portray. If you want a nice brief history for your kids, or even get a basic feel for the board sweep of English history, this book is a good beginning. But it is not a serious history and leaves the subtle ambiguities for the true historians.
I was looking for a brief overview of England's history. That is exactly what this book contains. Not good for in-depth history while at the same time it comprehensively covers all periods.
I highly recommend this book. It is well written and truly is illustrated. I purchased this book because the stories are about my distant relatives.
An excellent elementary history of England which taught me much I never learned in high school or college. I love reading this book with my children and will to do so with each of them when the time comes.
Very happy to have bought this book. It gives in brief and in a readable way the story of the ruling families of England.
