I enjoyed this book. It described features of SQL Plus that I did not even know it had. I go to this book when there is something in SQL Plus that I was not sure about (setting or parm) and I am always able to find the answer.

A must have if you do any kind of queries with Oracle.

Oracle SQL Plus: The Defnitive GuideJonthan Gennick1-56592-578-5This book is great for those using the SQL Plus tool. I use SQL Plus for Oracle 8 and 9. This book covers up to 8i but I have not had any trouble using the commands in 9i. I have not tried the commands listed on 10g yet. The book is easy to use since the topics are split into reasonable chapters and the font is large enough to read with the book beside the keyboard. I also like the chapters that list commonly used items in tables. One example would be the chapter listing the user_ and all_ views. The chapter covering the SET command is one I use frequently. This book is fairly specific to the usage of SQL Plus itself and does not delve too deeply into the inner workings of the Oracle database, but it does have examples in SQL query language and PL/SQL stored procedures. If one is looking for a book on SQL itself, I recommend another title. If one needs a book on SQL Plus, get this one.

The glories of the command line. SQLPlus [I am not going to write that irritating asterix] is an acknowledgment of the reality that for many large computer programs and operating systems, a command line utility is vital. The book explains this for the specific instance of hooking to Oracle's database. It is meant as a definitive reference. Showing every command, often accompanied by example code.For an Oracle DBA, a good acquaintance with SQLPlus is probably mandatory. From the book, you can see how to quickly interrogate the database and get results in various useful paginated formats. Plus, and vitally, you can see how to build script files that can be run, where these files encode your experience in amassing customised sequences of commands specific to your needs. Exactly analogous to batch files in most operating systems, and just as useful.Along those lines, SQLPlus is conceptually not that hard. When using Oracle, it is often far more important, and harder, to design optimal tables for a given problem.

I had bought this text a few years ago to learn SQL. Little did I know then that SQL Plus is a "sand box" that contains SQL. Needless to say that I was disappointed and had to shelf this book.However, after reading an introductory book on SQL and writing lots of code, I revisited this text and found it to be quite useful.In summary, this should not be used by SQL novices. This book teaches "SQL Plus" and not SQL per se. Once, you have learnt the language, this book will come handy to1, execute sql queries (by scripting)2, format the report3, set up the development environment4, to discover the database5, and much much moreOne reason for not assigning five stars is the lack of ease when it comes to downloading the sample code and installing it on my machine.

Jonathan Gennick and co did a good job here. This "Oracle SQL Plus: The Definitive Guide" would be appreciated by most users, although that advanced SQL users who thirst for a unique guidance, having understood the elementary basics of SQL are its primary target. The medium-sized book boasts of updated and revised information whose accuracy are indisputable. Its methodology is as well, dynamic. The pattern of this book is such that tries to turn difficult issues into entertaining ones. It is worth its asking price.

Well written, plenty of examples, very easy to read and follow. As someone who is new to SQL*Plus, I appreciated that. Once I got things installed and running, it was easy to get right into iSQL*Plus (running SQL commands through a browser interface) - really cool. The chapter on Create HTML Reports was very nice as well.I found this book very helpful.

For those who appreciate the technical aspect of game development, this book is a gold mine. A book containing documentation and sketches of the crucial process that started it all, this is a must have book. However, fair warning, don't expect captions explaining what each document is. This book, again, are for the franchise's biggest fans who want to own a copy of it's history. It's also for those who are interested in expierencing some of the paperwork and concept arts done for the series first game. As someone who knows a bit about the technical stuff, I couldn't ask for anything better as a fan book.

It is a comprehensive look at the original art bible that kicked off this beloved franchise. The content ranges from initial sketches to fully rendered art. Each page serves to depict the artist's thought process from initial creation to later stages of visual development. All of the images used are printed on a reasonably large scale so you can spend your time examining each shape in detail.Clearly some reviewers missed the point of this release.20 dollars for a 200 page art book on a series that has no media detailing its inception is clearly too rich for some more discerning enthusiasts.What you will mostly find in this book is Art. Like most Art books. The variety therein serves to paint a picture of the development process as a whole. It was clear the publishers trimmed any extraneous fat when crafting this book. Brevity serves this book well. I guess 200 pages was not enough for some elevated purveyors of art.

this book was not was i was expecting. i expecting this book to filled with concept art and stories of the creation of the first crash bandicoot, while you do get that, but not as much as you hope for. most of the pages are filled with technical stuff for the game levels and what not and the concept art is sparse, like nothing new you couldn't find online already . plus i think some concept art is missing that could of been placed in this book, like no early concept art of crash? no concept art of aku aku? also the layout of some the pages is kind of awful, like they placed most of the environment concept artwork over a two page spread making the bending of the book go right thought the artwork, that is very unappealing to me. plus some of the artwork was not scanned very good, you can see notebook lines and the edge of the paper with some scans. plus there was a page on early concept artwork of cortex's castle cut off into two pages, really you couldn't fill all of the image on to one page? plus some of the pages are blank, like there are note sheets from the creators, but nothing is written on them, what gives? why put those note sheets in the book in the first place? in ways i think a lot more time and effort could of been placed in the creation of this book,anyway, despite my complaints about this book, this book does gives some good insight into the game making process and the characters of the game and how much content was never shown in the final product of the first crash bandicoot game. i say get this only if your die hard crash bandicoot fan, but don't expect much from it. honesty if you want more insight stories from the creators on the creation of this game, just go to andy gavin's website "all things andy gavin."

This book contains artwork, documents, and notes that cover the first Crash game's design. I like how there are notes on how different game mechanics function. I also like how characters were given their own page of notes to detail how they tie in with the game's story.If you're a fan of Crash, this is a cool book to check out for its sketches and character notes alone. Consider it while the price is low.

I really wondered a lot about it’s content. It has a lot of art concept and some important documents related to the early beginnings of the project which gave me the inspiration of how to start a new video game project.Thank you Crash Bandicoot, you made my life better with fun and beauty.

One of these cultures is that of the Mayans, who have risen to public awareness because their calendar, an astronomically accurate and incredibly lengthy measure of time, goes only to 2012, then stops. Pop culture has turned this into a possible "doomsday" scenario. Since I am writing this in 2013, it is obvious that the world did not end.But did a World Age end with the winter solstice of 2012? Other authors on this subject did not consider 2012 "the end of the world" but as a fluid point between two ages, generally based on the precession of the equinoxes, a 26,000 year cycle that traces a path around the twelve constellations of the zodiac. This time period, known to the Mayans, can be divided into five World Ages of 5125 years each. Braden says we are at the end of the last of these five cycles. But that would assume that this point in the sky (at the beginning of the Age of Aquarius) was somehow the starting point. How is there a starting point to a cycle that presumably endlessly repeats?One answer might be that this is the point where (as author John Major Jenkins said in his book, Maya Cosmogenesis 2012: The True Meaning of the Maya Calendar End-Date) our solar system lines up with the midpoint of our galaxy, the Milky Way. But it's not clear that we are lined up with the galaxy, and I confess to finding the whole business confusing. But perhaps 2012 really is a dividing line between World Ages, and perhaps it actually means something for human consciousness. Braden discusses the concept that how we think and feel influences matter, and, if this transition time does mean more natural disasters, we have the power to reduce their impact through our thoughts and actions.It certainly does seem like we are living through a difficult time in our planet's history, for whatever reason. We know there has been climate change and extinction events in earth's past. Should we read some ominous meaning into the strong storms and earthquakes we've had since the century turned? There have also been way too many human-caused tragedies, with wars, terrorist attacks and nuts with guns shooting innocent people. If this is the turmoil of a transition from an age that is ending and leading to a Golden Age (as alleged by authors like David Wilcock, in The Source Field Investigations: The Hidden Science and Lost Civilizations Behind the 2012 Prophecies), then let's hope we get through it intact.Braden also offers a "time code" and a "time code calculator" for figuring out when "seed" events might repeat, or at least when conditions will exist for them to repeat. I was less interested in this, since it cannot predict actual events and it seems questionable as to which events are really "seed" events that might repeat. The basis for this calculator, which relies on the number known as "phi," seems dubious.The book makes some attempt at an explanation of the repeating nature of time, stating that time IS space as space expands outward from its beginning. Conditions on earth (and human consciousness) change with earth's position in the galaxy. There's the influence of the mysterious movement of earth known as the precession, as the position of the morning star slowly moves around the twelve constellations as it rises in the morning, a movement that takes almost 26,000 years to complete, a period much longer than human history. Yet this cycle was known to ancient peoples, including the Mayans. How are we and our planet influenced by this long cycle?Fractal Time explores many interesting questions. Like other authors, Braden offers interesting speculation, but is unable to provide solid answers to "The Secret of 2012 and a New World Age" (the book's intriguing subtitle).

Gregg Braden is always a great author and very informative. He is able to present his thoughts, ideas and information in a way that is very easy to understand. He was born to be a writer and has embraced his calling very enthusiastically. Always a lot of good and new information that we all need to know. Thanks to Gregg Braden for his dedication to his work. Excellent read.

This book has the selling point of being about the mystery and anticipation of 2012, but its true value is the fact that it introduces readers to the world of fractals,or patterns in nature.Gregg Braden does a great job of presenting evidence of patterns in nature, something scientists denied for many years because it strongly suggested the existence of some kind of intelligence behind what was supposed to be the "accident of life". Regardless, he does well in making the case that time is also part of nature and therefore also cyclical, or has patterns.He uses great examples like the history of presidents assassinated in office, the Kennedy-Lincoln connection, which, not to give anything away, is way too eerily similar to be called a coincidence.He also talks about the Golden Ratio, phi, which mathematicians find when measuring the actual patterns in nature.After reading this book I became obsessed with the topic of fractals. Great book. The author does a great job of simplifying what I thought was going to be a very complicated subject. Once you learn about the topic of fractals you will never look at the world the same way again.

If you are interested in knowing how the past and future work this is the book for you. The book outlines why certain major catastrophic events took place. It indicates that these events are all part of a grand plan directed by the universe and not controlled by man. We are mearly travelers on the planet called earth. The only hope we have is to study the universe so we can know what it's next move will be, the book indicates that the universe has provided us with all the information we need to interpret it. Our delema is developing the technology so we can read the signs. It did offer some hope in that we did avert one of the catastrophies , through technological intervention ,however if we are not fully vigilant the universe will ultimately win out. This is definately a fascinating must read.

Several years ago I purchased the movie Talvisota from Amazon to get a basic understanding of the Winter War. The film was available in either English or Korean subtitles, a good indicator of limited exposure. My interest in this war started when I purchased a Mosin Nagant M91/30 rifle and was told the SA mark on the receiver meant it was a "Finn capture". The rifle was made in the Tula arsenal near Moscow in 1937 and was captured in the first Winter War. Hopefully, its owner returned to Russia (maybe it was better he didnt), his rifle did not and presently sits in my house for recreational use. When I saw this book I thought I could get some background and I was right. This is a very fair and balanced book and provided especially important information about Mannerheim and why he was the man for the job. Mannerheim was a former Tsarist officer with over 30 years experience. He was not a representative Finn, actually Swedish nobility. I never knew he had served under Brusilov as a corps commander. He was one of the few successful White generals, in that he kept Finland independent after the Bolshevik revolution. He understood the Russian soldier and knew that a Finnish defeat was inevitable. His plan was to buy time in the hope of a political solution that kept his country independent. He had seen Poland disappear and he had to know the Baltic states were in similar danger. Fortunately, he had the right people for the job, the Finns themselves. It is incredible to read about the toughness and courage of these people. These are ordinary people doing extraordinary things with very limited resources . Their sheer force of will preserved them.

A great telling of the Winter War with plenty of details and anecdotes from individual soldiers but not too much where it becomes muddled by details.It was pretty tough trying to pronounce all of the Finnish names (I gave up, lol) and keep them straight but it's kind of expected, I suppose, for a native English speaker who is unfamiliar with Finland.I have the Kindle version of this book and in my opinion, get the paperback or hardcover version unless you really want the Kindle version. You cannot zoom in on any of the maps in the book, which I found f'ing ridiculous and disappointing, so you cannot use them to follow along where units were placed or moved to/form.

One move was the relatively quiet, but equally destructive consumption of Poland’s eastern half. The other move was forcefully demanding Finland to cede territory near Leningrad. While Poland was quickly crushed between the might of a two-sided invasion, Finland used its terrain, climate and little more than a sense of purpose to shock the massive Red Army. With A FROZEN HELL, William Trotter details this vicious and miserable conflict in an entertaining manner that reads more like a dramatic novel than history.The significance of the war between Finland and the Soviet Union is naturally suppressed by the onset of World War II. While the documentation of Germany’s aggression is standard fare, similar conduct by the Soviet Union garners much less attention. When the Soviet Union forced its awkward Goliath-might on a quiet nation hidden in the nether regions of northern Europe, it found itself facing a resolute foe that was quite capable of bleeding the Red Army white.William Trotter brings the nastiness of the Winter War to life. Even though we know the historical outcome of the conflict, the book’s lively take on historical events gives readers the impression the outcome might challenge reality. Trotter’s narrative is neutral, but it is hard not to root for the outnumbered and out-gunned Finns defending their nation from an armored Soviet onslaught. The historical outline of the conflict is thoroughly colored with interesting and insightful individual accounts that make it easy to envision the events being described. We get a vivid image of the utter misery experienced fighting in Arctic weather and how costly it was for the unprepared Soviet Union. Soviet expectations of a quick and easy victory led to poor planning and decision-making that would prove disastrous. Simple things like neglecting to white-wash vehicles, issue camouflaged uniforms or effectively map terrain created a maelstrom of havoc on the invaders. Trotter shines in showing how the Finns used the frigid environment and rugged terrain as a weapon. How lumbering columns of Soviet tanks and soldiers, unfamiliar with the terrain and unprepared for the weather, are cut into isolated pockets by aggressive Finnish soldiers who then let the arctic weather take its toll on the pockets. I particularly enjoyed how Trotter points out the vast differences between Finland’s Army and Red Army. The Finns were innovative and resourceful, while the Red Army was encumbered by rigid and archaic military doctrine. When the battered Soviet Union finally decides to stop “playing around” with Finland and commits to ending the conflict, we begin to see the names of Soviet generals who would eventually lead the Soviet Union to victory over Nazi Germany years later. Even the end of the Winter War is characterized as a last-minute diplomatic drama that saves Finland from Soviet rule.While my curiosity in understanding the Russo-Finnish War created my desire to read about it, I never thought I would become so engrossed in the conflict once I started reading A FROZEN HELL. The entertaining and colorful narrative made this book such an enjoyable and interesting read. If I were to recommend any book on the subject matter, A FROZEN HELL would certain be my choice.

This is a fascinating account of the Winter War between Finland and Stalin's Soviet Union. It follows the heroic stand and actions of the Finns, whose nation numbered less than four million in 1939, in mauling the Red Army through determined leadership, innovative tactics and Sisu ( Finnish conjones), the Finns preserved their nation in the face of one of the great monsters of the twentieth century!!!

Being a big fan of Finnish history, I really enjoyed reading Trotter's book on the Winter War. I specially liked the chronology of events, which were highly detailed, mentioning the number of troops, their commanders, the battlezones, the kind of weapons they used, and the outcome. Since I have already read a lot on this conflict, including the Air War, the only topic not covered appropriately in this book is the aerial operations, which are only mentioned marginally. Anyhow, I strongly recommend this book if you like Finnish military history

Savage Worlds brings us "All for One" a world in which demons, dark magic exist in the world of France in the 17th century and the only line of defense are the King and Queen's Musketeers. France is a powder keg of political issues, the rabble screaming for its king to do something about the heavy taxes and the lack of food or common decency. The nobles want more gold and they want power and position and to see the end of Cardinal Richelieu iron grip on the power he has and the control over the King Louie. The book itself is a great book of game mechanics as to how to play the game and what edges and abilities are and are not allowed in the game. Not only does it go into detail as to the type of fencing allowed. It also details what abilities you gain by taking certain edges. For fans of such games this is a great must have. And while the history does take a few liberties to allow for the game to have flavor like the introduction of demons and the like. Its a pretty good game to have. Many of the reviewers have noted proof reading errors which are there, however they don't take away from the overall mechanics of how to play.

All For One is a really interesting game. I think it's a fantastic idea and I'm surprised that I haven't seen any other games that have explicitly done that 3 Musketeers sort of swashbuckling. It tends to be more pirate-oriented instead. I like that it's not historical and it's got a lot of cultists and Satanists and black magic and other stuff going on, which allows the game to have a lot more variety in terms of adventure possibilities. I have relatively limited experience with Savage Worlds, but it appears that the game is well suited for the system and that the game adds some interesting things to Savage Worlds mechanically.What's not good about it is the organization and proofreading. The organization is super weird for the first half of the book. You can tell that a lot of stuff was sewn together from the original version of the book (which is for another system) because the order is kind of messy and it doesn't flow well. There are a lot of editing mistakes and at least one piece of art is used twice. Speaking of art, the art selection is kind of weird. The art is good, but I think if you just looked at it and not read the book you'd expect that Musketeers fight werewolves pretty much constantly.Overall, I like it. It's got some issues, but I think it'd be a fun game to play.
