SPOILERS INCLUDED:Alfie is the sweetest story about a little girl and her turtle. I don’t even like turtles. They smell and live too long to be a good pet (if you want to live a long time and will do so independently, then good for you. But if you’re living in my home as a pet, I prefer you have a 5 year max life span. Dogs only exception) If we got one today, my kid will have moved out before his turtle. I am not ready to commit to that many years of responsibility and care taking. So kudos to the girls’ parents for even allowing her to get a turtle in the first place. It starts off from the perspective of the girl and then switched mid story to the turtle, so you get to hear both experiences. We first checked this out at the library but I loved it so much I bought it for my 6 year old immediately. So what I’m saying is I could have read this book for free, and I did, but I still went on to pay money for it.
What a fabulous book! Written from the perspectives of both Nia and her pet turtle, Alfie. A great way to show two sides of the same event (Alfie leaving his tank). Love the story and the amazing illustrations!
There’s nothing like the relationship between a child and their pet.I adored the fact that this story was told from both Nia and Alfie’s perspectives. The friendship between these two characters was charming and sweet. I never would have guessed that a young girl and a turtle would get along as well as these two did, but it was a lot of fun to see how their explanations of what happened when Alfie disappeared were different based on how each character saw the world. It would have been nice to see more attention paid to the ending. I spent so much time looking forward to seeing if Alfie would succeed at his mission and if these two friends would be reunited that I was a little disappointed by how quickly everything was wrapped up. There were certain things I was hoping to see happen with these characters before the final scene came to a close. When that didn’t happen, I felt let down. The plot twists were adorable. I especially liked the ones that showed what happened to Alfie after Nia believed he’d been lost. Not only did they make a lot of sense from a turtle’s point of view, they were filled with moments that made me smile. I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen to Alfie next on his quest to find the perfect birthday gift for her, and I sure hoped he’d be successful.I’d recommend Alfie to kids and adults who are animal lovers.originally posted at long and short ya reviews
This review was originally published on the DRTTMK website. This is a strange book. A girl named Nia gets a turtle named Alfie for her sixth birthday, and talks to him every day, and then gets bored of him, until a year later when he disappears. Then the point of view shifts to Alfie's perspective, where he actually is responding to everything she says even though she can't see it. He's highly personified, even though the art is fairly realistic. It turns out that he leaves his tank to try to find her a birthday present for her seventh birthday. He goes outside, time passes, winter comes and he hibernates in the back yard of the townhouse Nia lives in, and dives to the bottom of the fish pond where he finds a turtle keychain. He surfaces to find Nia celebrating her eighth birthday party, and comes to her with the keychain riding on his shell. It seems somewhat unrealistic for Alfie to survive the whole year on his own. Turtles do actually hibernate, but would a pet turtle know how to find food, especially in a backyard? It also seems strange that nobody finds Alfie in his travels from the apartment to the pond. I think maybe the message that the author is trying to get across (other than, "Turtles are cool") is that people/creatures appreciate everything you do for them even if they don't show it. But I don't feel like that's true with animals, especially relatively primitive ones like turtles. They might appreciate generic attention, but they're not going to be "laughing" at jokes, let alone thinking about how to repay kindness. Who knows why turtles escape. I doubt it's to find birthday presents, though. Maybe they don't actually like their living conditions. And in the half of the book narrated by Alfie, he doesn't seem to even notice when Nia becomes bored with him. It also seems unrealistic for him to somehow climb down the fire escape of the building. Even if he lands in a pile of leaves, I'm not sure he'd be uninjured. Also, if Alfie is actually a species of turtle which can hibernate underwater, it'd be nice for the author to have made that clearer, maybe even explaining the methodology behind it. For example, turtles can apparently breathe through their butts (look it up!). And I guess Alfie doesn't feel like coming out of hibernation for a while after spring has arrived, unlike the average hibernating animal. If animals were not only self-aware, but capable of communicating with each other, wouldn't they be aware of the passage of time? Or, at the very least, the rising and setting of the sun? But, no, Alfie thinks that the party he arrives at, Nia's eighth birthday party, is the same day as he left, a year before. Maybe he's just really stupid. It's not a bad book, just somewhat shaky in plot. The writing is okay. The art is pretty good. And Nia and her family are nonwhite, which is a plus for diversity. I'm just not that crazy about it.Message: Turtles love you back.
Alfie is a turtle - one who disappears. This book, which is really two stories, tells the tale of Nia, who got a turtle for her 6th birtday, and Alfie, the turtle, who went exploring and was gone for a full year.Heder's prose is spare, leaving the reader space to savor the words and appreciate the illustrations. The text doesn't really convey that Alfie was on his adventure for a full year, but the illustrations give clues about the changing seasons, and the birthday balloons with Nia's age give additional hints. As a teacher & librarian, I see ways in which this book can be a springboard for conversations about perspective and understanding how others feel. Nia didn't perceive that Alfie appreciated her company, but when we read Alfie's part of the book, we see Nia's actions through his eyes.On a final note, Nia is African American. This is not essential to the plot, she just is. This book is like Keats' The Snowy Day in that it shows a child enjoying the familiar rituals of childhood, and this child just happens to be a person of color.NOTE: I received this copy for free while at the Independent Booksellers Association trade show, the Heartland Fall Forum.
