This book is exactly what it promises to be - a book for beginners. I already know some calligraphy, having dabbled in it for years, but I found this book to be very helpful. I like that there is plenty of room in the book for practice, which, of course, makes perfect. It was very easy to follow and well laid out. Also, it seems fairly complete in itself. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get started in learning to write beautifully.
We are a house full of scribes with many fountain pens and lots of paper. Our children down to our littlest have been taught to use a fountain pen from the age of 5. We are always on the hunt for books that make calligraphy easy to understand and copy. This book certainly does a wonderful job explaining and demonstrating how to write in this beautiful cursive style. I highly recommend this book, and do not forget the saying, practice makes perfect, although I recommend small sessions on the practice end, 2-4 minutes for youngers and 5 minutes for a little older and increase to 10 minutes for older children. Everyday practice is also our recommendation based on our experience in teaching our children.
Over the last couple of years, my friends and I have found a need to want to learn calligraphy in order to add more to our crafts and handwriting skills. My son is also now at the age where I started learning cursive writing. I personally have okish writing so I was interested to see how well this would go for me.This book is a short book with basic descriptions for the types of strokes to use, recommended writing utensils, and guides to follow for how to slant your writing and properly do calligraphy styled writing, including practice lines with the slant lines to ensure the right angle. I LOVE the simple trace, copy and practice method like you see your child do for learning their letters and numbers in Pre-K. It made it easy to sit down and practice and learn the style correctly.The book has you practice basic strokes at first, then leads to capital and lower case letters, how to combine letters into words, and then simple sentences. The hardest part, for me, was as an experienced writer in print and cursive, that I tried to do those a cursive style some instead. The practice paper and instructions are simple enough that I think I'll use this as a baseline for teaching my 2nd grader basic calligraphy/cursive skills also, which is great because I wasn't sure what I'd use for this as a homeschool parent.I do highly recommend this book for someone looking to learn a basic understanding of Calligraphy and how to do it properly. I personally still need to work on it more but can just use some of the blank slanted lined pages to continue my practice. If you're wanting a more in depth and complicated learning style, then this book isn't for you :) It isn't very detailed in instructions as a fair warning so may work best in conjunction with a video guiding you to proper utensil holding technique and such. It does have plenty of practice space for learning the style and you can always make more copies if needed.*I was contacted by the publisher and given this book for my honest opinion. My honest opinion is what I have written and am very happy to be able to give this book a fantastic rating!
*I was given this book in exchange for my honest review.When offered a chance to try out the book for free in exchange for an honest review I jumped on the chance. My son has difficulty with handwriting, I had always heard that learning calligraphy helps with handwriting. It slows the entire process down and has the child focus on the letters. And, because it is art it is not supposed to be as intimidating. Well, that did not work. Handwriting is still handwriting for my kid. He did not like it because it involves letters. And, the letters look pretty weird to him and he does not like that. I think I will use a calligraphy pen for his cursive writing. The calligraphy pen will slow him down and help him feel the pen on paper better. So, the book did not work for the reason I hoped it would.That being said, I like it! There is something therapeutic about writing out letters. It's like an adult coloring book for me. The book teaches you step by step how to write calligraphy. The beginning is a bit boring with practicing all the slants and such. But,after you learn that you can start focusing on letters and then words and sentences. I probably will just play around with the book and not get too serious with calligraphy. It will be a stress reliever. I'm great at it when I am tracing. It's much harder to make the letters on your own.Five stars because I think it meets my standard for a beginning calligraphy book. It really does teach everything in a step by step thorough manner. My final product is never quite what it is supposed to be. I always seem to get something a little off when I try it. It reminds me of my kids when they started learning handwriting. I have them circle the best attempt. Yeah, I still fall short. But, I still have some pretty awesome results that I can be proud of and maybe I should circle my best attempt.
I think this would be better described as a “Practice Book†rather than Calligraphy for Beginners. I have no prior Calligraphy experience and while I found this great for practicing calligraphy I felt it greatly lacked instruction. I would have liked more pictures of how to hold your pen or marker as well as suggestions with pictures of different pen and marker types. Pictures of the strokes the pens markers make would be helpful as well. I ordered some dual tip pens off Amazon and I was unable to make the thin up stroke due to the poor quality of the marker. Things like this would have been great to know ahead of time for a beginner such as myself. Poor quality=poor Calligraphy. The actual pages with the lines as guides are great! It definitely gives you plenty of “practice†but it lacks instruction. I think if some things were added it would be great book. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
