Timeless: Classic American Architecture for Contemporary Living, by Patrick Ahearn

Review

We make sense of our lives by the stories we tell ourselves about those lives. And no place is the curator of those stories like a home. It needn’t be an ancestral house or the place where we raise our families. It might be the cottage we visit only in summer. Or a chalet in the mountains. Or a city condominium. Or even the dream home still in the dream stage. Talk to Patrick Ahearn long enough about architecture, and that’s what you take away: Houses are the frames around our lives. We build them to shelter the spiritual as much as the physical. (John Budris Vineyard Style Review)That book, Timeless: Classic American Architecture for Contemporary Living (Oro Editions), showcases how Ahearn has expertly ascribed the greater-good theory to his work. Released last December, “Timeless” features 18 homes designed by Ahearn along with the stories behind their design, as told by Ahearn. The homes―a mix of historic restorations and new construction―are divided into six categories: History Preserved, History Enhanced, History Modernized, History Imagined, History Re-Interpreted, and On The Water. Ahearn and his team put together the 316-page collection in under a year, a challenging feat in itself before taking into consideration Ahearn had four decades worth of work to choose from. (HALEY COTE Cape Cod Homes Review)Ahearn’s story is told in a new book, Timeless: Classic American Architecture for Contemporary Living, written with Andrew Sessa. It begins when Ahearn, then a recent graduate of architecture school at Syracuse University, went to work for Benjamin Thompson & Associates, the firm responsible for turning Boston‘s Faneuil Hall into a marketplace. In 1978, he started his own practice (with an office in Faneuil Hall), and by the late 1980s he had renovated hundreds of buildings in Boston’s historic neighborhoods. But after visiting Martha’s Vineyard, the 90-square-mile island off Cape Cod, in 1989, he found his calling. (FRED A. BERNSTEIN Architectural Digest)With an eye attuned to design from childhood, architect Patrick Ahearn was strongly influenced by his home town of Levittown, New York. The houses and streets of America's first planned community were thoughtfully designed and laid out in a perfect balance of density and scale. When Ahearn writes, in the forward of his new book, that his career has been shaped by two core beliefs―"that design―good design―has the power to improve people's lives, and that learning from the past is crucial to creating the future"―he can trace the origins of that first conviction to his boyhood in Levittown. Ahearn has spent his long career putting those principles into practice here in New England. The two-dozen projects featured in Timeless stand as beautiful evidence of his positive impact on our architectural landscape.Mr. Ahearn’s new book Timeless (subtitled Classic American Architec¬ture for Contemporary Living), is a lush tome with hundreds of pictures of Edgartown homes. He says his intention was to pass along some of the lessons learned. “I’m 67 years old, I’ve been doing this for 44 years,” he says. “I really felt that my message about how I practice is important, not just for my clients, but even for other architects and other architects to be. I wanted to create a kind of primary about how you work in scale, and how the spaces between the buildings become important, and still be able to accommodate a client’s program, but also teach them about the public good theory, teach them about the context in which you work.” (STEVE MYRICK Vineyard Gazette Review)Downtown Edgartown demonstrates the architect’s “Greater Good Theory,” which “enhances the quality of life for the overall community while respecting the local character, scale, and imagery”―clearly a tactic with roots in those long ago potato fields. Ahearn’s newly released Timeless: Classic American Architecture for Contemporary Living showcases 18 projects that demonstrate his idea that design has the power to improve lives and enhance happiness. (KILEY JACQUES Period Homes Review)If you’ve ever spent time in Edgartown, Massachusetts ― the exclusive Martha’s Vineyard enclave known for its 18th- and 19th-century Federal and Greek Revival architecture ― you’ve likely seen the work of Patrick Ahearn. But you probably had no idea that he, or any other present-day architect, had a role in shaping what you viewed there. And as far as Ahearn is concerned, that’s exactly the point. As he tells readers in his new book, Timeless (Oro Editions), which I had the pleasure to help him write, “If I have done my job correctly, I will be like a ghost who visits in the night ― leaving no trace and most successful when no one sees my hand.” (Andrew Sessa)

Really great book. Big, beautiful full page photos. All of the homes featured have great backstories the architect created to help propel each design. The result are wonderful homes full of character. I could happily live in any one of them. The book is aptly named; the homes are all designed with a truly timeless feel. If I could have one wish regarding the book, it would simply be more pictures of each house...there are never enough to satiate my curiosity; I want to see every inch! I buy a lot of residential architecture books, and this is already one of my absolute favorites.

Wowwww... This is what you call taste and design. If you don't know who Patrick Ahearn is, start looking him up right now. This man is excellent at his job and very down to earth. This book is a must have for anyone who loves a good design with every detail perfectly executed. You won't regret buying it.The pictures are rich and vivid, and I personally love the history so that one can understand how he got to where he is now. Will buy more of his books so that I can stop stalking his website and instagram :):).

Run don’t walk and purchase this book. He is an American treasure. I cannot stop looking at the pictures and reading the commentary. I am fortunate to be able to see his work in Chatham Massachusetts on a weekly basis. It never ceases to amaze me. You will love this book!

Timeless is the right word for this absolutely stunning book featuring restorations, remodels and new builds in the traditional Cape Cod style. I’ve already spent hours devouring every word and photo and know I’ll be searching for inspiration in its pages for years to come. It also looks gorgeous on my coffee table!

As most quality books on Architects work published today it has great photos and display of their work. But like most quality books on Architects today it is really to big and heavy to completely enjoy. They are really a little off putting just to pick up. The old now, smaller 8 1/2 by 11 around 200 pages much more comfortable.

This book is exactly what it conveys, classic.Beautiful book.

Absolutely beautiful book, I have it out for guests to enjoy as well. So happy with this book.

Very comprehensive and thick!! Like it a lot. My only problem w it is the printing. All the rough guides I’ve got in the past have had a nice batch of well printed photos with high gloss finish. This one does not. Very cool book tho.

With technology, these guides have become far less useful. Good for general information but that’s about it. I suppose that they know their market niche, but I’d rather see more on alternative lodging options—eg Airbnb—than high end hotels.

Better written than Lonely Planet and with color pages. My go to brand and reliable as ever.

Good book. Need more info but looking forward to our trip.

This 944-page book, the 16th printed edition of March 2018, is an interesting and readable (the two are not always found together) guide to the United Kingdom of Spain (read the history section).Unlike many guides, this is not a glossy booklet dotted with colourful photographs to make it look superficially attractive, but a (literally) rough guide in terms of comparative paper finishes, but well-designed and presented, with readable text, useful maps, and (well-chosen) photographs only where space allowed. The excellent design and layout means that you don’t need unnecessary spot illustrations to break up column after column of small-printed data.Note that this guide does cover a large country; if you are only going to one region or city, a guide just for that region might be more useful, whereas this might be better for choosing a place to visit, unless you are planning on a number of trips (or a long one). The Contents are –P004: Introduction (when & where to go, what to see, itineraries)P026: Basics (travel, accommodation, food & drink, activities, all the important stuff for visitors, such as “culture & etiquette”)The Guide (the regions, and what is in them)P058: MadridP124: Around MadridP170: Castilla-La Mancha & ExtremaduraP222: AndaluciaP368: Castilla y Leon & La RiojaP444: Euskal Herria: the Pais Vasco & NavarraP498: Cantabria & AsturiasP544: GaliciaP596: AragonP642: BarcelonaP706: CatalunyaP792: Valencia & MurciaP848: The Balearic IslandsP892: Contexts (articles on history, wildlife, flamenco, etc.)P925: LanguageP934: Index

Review

I saw a new dimension of Van Gogh and his genius when the author tells the story of him purchasing a mirror so that he could use himself as a model; he did this to save money; he had little of it. I was, also, impressed with information about the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam, and the comments about impressionists: "impressionist mixed colors on the canvas." I had not realized that Van Gogh experimented with a Japanese style. I realized that Van Gogh used many styles to express what he sensed, not only impressionism. I love Van Gogh's country side paintings. After reading the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam and the explanations about these works, I found myself loving them even more. I was impressed with the information about the museums near the Van Gogh Museum. I am not a world traveler and have had no desire to visit the world since college. Reading the Van Gogh Museum has awakened a small desire to go visit this museum.- Barbara L.I found the book on the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam to be interesting and informative. I especially like the fact that his actual works, especially his signature pieces in the Museum were presented and discussed. Van Gogh had a very short artistic life, but it was rich, varied and complex, as was he. After the succinct, place driven discussion of Van Gogh's life, I especially liked the information on his contemporaries. After all, each person (whether an artist or not) is using others in his or her world to enrich, distract, shape or otherwise forward the career. By presenting them as a unit within an artistic community, Van Gogh is given greater perspective and depth. This book gives a holistic rendering of the essential artwork of this important artist.- V.M. RicksI bought this as a series of ebooks to prepare me for my upcoming trip to Amsterdam. This one is my favorite, since I feel a special connection to Van Gogh. While this book is definitely a great resource for the museum, I was pleasantly surprised at all the history and context included as well. For instance, this book discusses the Japanese influence on some of Van Gogh's work--something I have not read in other books on this artist. In addition, Van Gogh's contemporaries are also discussed. Even the smallest interesting facts--such as the meaning of almond blossoms as it relates to a painting Van Gogh did--are included. Along with maps and resources, the detailed information on Van Gogh in this book is invaluable. A definite must-have for those planning to visit this museum! - ShyGalGreat guide on the famous Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. I will be visiting Amsterdam soon and am now preparing my visit. I very much enjoyed reading this guide on Van Gogh, his life, and his most celebrated paintings. The book also contains a lot of information on paintings by his contemporaries like Seurat, Gauguin, Pissarro and Monet. So when I will be standing in front of the Sunflowers, the Potato Eaters or Vincent's own bedroom at the Yellow House I will not need any audio-guides and should be able to enjoy the beauty of the paintings even more! - MandusReading this book and going through each piece of art discussed makes me feel like I am already in the museum and exploring each and every one of those. If you are planning to go, reading this is a must so you are already familiar with Van Gogh's works and will get to enjoy them more. - Amie Cullen

This was more like a brochure than an actual book. Small and with very few pages. I had planned to give it as a gift to someone who had gone there and loved it, but I would be embarrassed to give something so cheap looking. For a few dollars more I could have gotten a large, hard cover coffee table book of everything he ever painted. Should have done that.

I found the book on the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam to be interesting and informative. I'm sure that for less money than you would spend on a trip to Amsterdam you can see some of the art on display in the Van Gogh Museum. Along with the art you will also learn of the artist who's work is on display.

I was expecting something more than a leaflet....its not a book and the pictures of vangoghs paintings are very small......Ive been to the museum in Amersterdam and thought it woud be a moment but was very disappointed with this

Great overview of the classics at the Rijksmuseum.

Early Modern Dialogue with Islam: Antonio de Sosa's Topography of Algiers (1612) (History, Languages, and Cultures of the Spanish and Portuguese Worlds)

Review

"This interesting and important new book offers the first dedicated scholarly investigation into major movements of ecumenical contact among Anglicans and Orthodox between the First World War and the Second World War. Bryn Geffert draws on substantial archival work in English and Russian to write what he calls 'the story of efforts toward rapprochement by two churches and their ultimate failure to achieve formal unity of intercommunion.' . . . Above all, this is a cautionary tale about the difficulties inherent in connections among churches with very positive intentions but no ability to speak with one voice." (The Living Church)

An excellent novel. Very cinematic (it's not hard to imagine how Spielberg's upcoming adaptation will look), clever, full of memorable characters and easter eggs for almost every kind of geek.If you like movies, video-games and good ol' fashioned adventures, you'll definitely enjoy this book.

Thing about writing a novel like this as one's debut effort is that, from here on out, there's nowhere to go but down. To wit, Armada. Ernie Cline's Ready Player One impacted me the same way that Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games did. It's compulsive reading. Cline spins his dystopian quest adventure with supreme vitality and brio and unabashed adoration of all things nerdy. Cyberpunk collides with pop culture nostalgia, and how could you not get nerd out about a book that celebrates iconic elements of the 1980s? I mean, Family Ties is referenced! Oingo Boingo gets a mention. Here comes the plot set-up, and maybe a ***SPOILER ALERT*** now.The year is 2044, and the global population endures its fourth decade of economic collapse. Huzzah. In a world of fading prospects and rapidly dwindling natural resources, everyone's favorite pastime is the Oasis, a massive, all-inclusive multiplayer online game that had metamorphosed into a globally networked virtual reality universe what's now habitually accessed by nearly everyone on the planet. The Oasis has become such a panoptic entity, it's become synonymous with the Internet. In the Oasis, kids attend virtual school, business offices can purchase virtual landscape to promote their wares, virtual concerts are staged. Who wouldn't prefer this utopian cyberspace over bleak reality? When they can look for James Halliday's fabled Easter egg, nestled somewhere in the vastness of Oasis?Eccentric genius video game designer - and creator of Oasis - James Halliday, before dying, recorded a video in which he challenges all comers to seek out his hidden treasure, to first unearth and then figure out the clues he'd embedded in the fabric of his Oasis program. His Easter egg, when found, conveys untold riches and power and unfettered administrative control over the Oasis. Overnight, the hunt for Halliday's treasure became the new global recreation. Halliday's addiction with 1980s pop culture was well documented, and so, too, in their feverish pursuit did these Easter egg hunters - nicknamed "gunters" - immerse themselves in Halliday's obsession, triggering a global revival of 1980s culture. But years and years would elapse before the elusive first clue would surface. Meanwhile, the gunters developed into figures of ridicule. In the slums of Oklahoma City, in the Stacks - a decaying community in which run-down trailer homes are stacked on top of each other - 18-year-old orphan Wade Watts ekes out a miserable existence. Reclusive and anti-social, Wade is a low-level but dedicated gunter, a walking talking encyclopedia of vintage 1980s facts and trivia. He realizes that his only hope for a better life is to win the game. And so he perseveres when so many have given up. And, even though he's only a self-declared "third level wimp," he works out the location of the first clue. It's a life-changing thing. The virtual scoreboard allows everyone to track his and other competitors' progress. Wade - or, rather, his avatar Parzival - becomes an instant worldwide celebrity - making him the target of fellow gunters and groupies and the media and, worse, of sinister corporations hungry to seize control of the Oasis. In his quest for Halliday's holy grail, Wade Watts - alliteratively named by his comic book-reading father - must call on every bit of his tech savvy and knowledge of 1980s culture to outwit his competitors and enemies. He is an awesome character that boasts impressive measures of pluck and resourcefulness and audacity in the face of frightening odds. And Wade Watts only becomes more awesome once he's compelled to venture out into the real world for survival's sake.If the cyberpunk yarns of William Gibson and Neal Stephenson tend to intimidate you, be at ease with Ready Player One. Ernie Cline has crafted an immensely accessible story. He makes you swim in nostalgia. I'm not a 1980s buff, but I'm an old cat who actually lived his childhood thru the '80s, and it is so much fun trying to catch all of Cline's references. Ready Player One is a well-told, richly realized, and incredibly satisfying adventure, one populated by appealing characters. There's even a sweet love story. Wade engages in an online flirtation with a talented fellow gunter named Art3mis, and so we get a peek into Wade's gnawing doubts as to what the person beneath the Art3mis avatar is really like (and even what she really looks like). But that's just misdirection. It's another character who drops the startling reveal."Unputdownable" isn't a real word, yet it's the perfect adjective for this book. I think that everyone, at some level, has a grain of geekness in them. If you've ever envisioned scenes of your favorite cartoons or animes interacting, if you've once loved a movie so much that you've memorized entire passages of its dialogue, or been influenced by a rock song to the extent that you'd picked up a guitar to learn the chords... Ernie Cline revives these feelings. Ready Player One moves like a locomotive, and there are scenes in it that will absolutely explode your nerdy brain. Ready Player One was a New York Times Bestseller. It's soon to be a blockbuster motion picture what's directed by Steven Spielberg, and, self-deprecating guy that he is, good luck to him trying to tamp down on the book's references to his movies. I'm hyped for the movie. But the book came first, and the book will have an even more special place in my nerd heart. It's easily in my top five favorite reads ever. Ready Player One, yeah, an immersive, imaginative, childhood-mining, unputdownable read. Armada, not so much.

Reads like it was written by a high-school student. And to the people that think that's because it's POV: ALL of his writing is like that. Everything that the protagonist needs to happen, happens fine and everything works out because he is the chosen one of some rich nerd's world. It's the worst kind of wish fulfillment. I hate the term Mary-Sue but that's what this book is about.

I got this after seeing the movie and hearing from a few friends about how different the book is. My two main points after reading this book in 3 days:1. Love the 80's pop culture references integrated into the story. No book I've ever read has ever gone this deep into 80's game, movie, TV, music references. The writer is obviously a true 80's fanatic and geek. No doubt about that, this guy has lived it and did his homework.2. The main character is completely unlikable. He never arcs or changes, even at the end (finding 'love' is not a character change). Honestly, I've never read a book where the main character is just a complete and utter unlikeable character even to the end. You never really want this jerk to succeed. His inner workings and thoughts are as just about as bad as the main villain.Conclusion-Steven Spielberg did a brilliant job taking the meat of this story and actually making the primarily character LIKEABLE because the writer was just down right horrible at it. If the filmmakers had followed the book, no doubt it wouldn't have been successful. I did enjoy the 80's references, but too bad the main character was unlikable.

I can hardly understand the allure of this novel. Or how it managed to gain such popularity. Feels like its written for a fourteen year old, which is in such contrast to the age group who would either understand or have experienced anything that happens in this book... those of us in our late thirties, early forties. It read like a list of games and game explanations, with zero character development. I never finished... because I really didn't care about any of the characters in the book or what the outcome would be. I often found myself nodding off, chapter after chapter. It's a poor write... and a poorer read.

Tolkien wrote Lord of the Rings as a 'myth for the machine age.' I think RP1 is an imaginative fairy tale for the online-gamer / virtual reality age. And the picture isn't pretty. I'm not talking about the cliche'd 'environmental apocalypse' of the outside world that the gamers actually live in, but the way that VR *is* their reality, and, to the characters, and in a very truthful way, the only reality that matters. That disturbing aspect of Cline's novel is imaginatively and entertainingly written. The first third of the novel is a marvel. I'd give it ten stars. The second two-thirds, like The Martian in many ways, is a bit repetitive and predictable in a TV-series sort of way.The novel is worthy and well-written, and the fairy tale aspect is touching. You end up rooting for the heroes and heroine, and even get a small glimpse into the motivations and heart of the villain (though I think he could have been much better presented, a la J. K. Rowling's villains). All in all, a highly enjoyable book. The best take I've read on VR and online gaming. Plus it's lots of fun!

About the Author

Kelly, a "baseballoholic" and a self-described expert at negotiating airports, is in his 33rd year of teaching at the high school level. He currently teaches at Magnolia High School in Anaheim, California. He believes that "there is no greater pleasure than teaching someone something." Teaching is "artistic, it matters a great deal, and I can never get the job down perfectly."Kelly thinks that professional development should treat teachers as such - professionals. "I know in the classroom that good things happen when my students have meaningful discussions. I know as a teacher myself that my craft sharpens when I am given the opportunity to have meaningful discussions with my peers. And let's have a laugh or two while we are at it."Writing his six books for Stenhouse was a solitary experience. "Though I have written outlines prior to each of my books, I have yet to follow any of them step-by-step. That is why I find writing rewarding - because the act of writing itself generates new thinking, and new thinking is always exciting."

I went to a Kelly Gallagher training session about reading instruction over a year ago, and it was, far and away, the best professional development that I’ve ever been to. It was one creative, practical, and student-friendly idea after another. I immediately read two books by Gallagher about reading instruction (Deeper Reading and Readicide--both highly recommended) and have been incorporating his ideas into my classes ever since. It was my summer goal to take a look at what he had to offer with regard to writing instruction. As it happens, Write Like This was every bit as useful as the reading books were. He offers his general philosophy of writing instruction: (1) that students need to read real-world models and write for real-world purposes and (2) that the teacher--as the best writer in the classroom--should demonstrate the decisions that good writers make before the students. He then divides the book by the six general purposes of writing and offers multiple suggestions for approaches to teaching that kind of writing. It’s easy to see how students would find these assignments compelling, and it’s also easy to see how these strategies would help the students to be better writers. My only problem reading the book is not flaw of Gallagher’s. When I read it, I keep thinking, “This is what teaching should be like. Think how much my students would grow and improve if we could just do this stuff all year.” Of course, the sadness is that the district and state standards and the ridiculous testing my students will need to pass at the end of the year will mean that I’m forced to teach something of lesser quality and distorted purposes for at least a portion of the year. So it goes. I do think that every idea I pull from this book will make my class a better experience for my students.

I was given a copy of this book to use to teach struggling and at-risk students. I was told to start with Chapter 6, "Analyze and Interpret." As I used the chapter to write lesson plans I noticed a startling trend. Here are the references Gallagher uses in just this chapter:Write Like This by Kelly Galagher (white male)Chapter 6: Analyze & InterpretPg 135 Example Columbine, Dave Cullen (white male)Pg 136 Dr Robert Hare (white male)Pg 138 Phillip Niemeyer (white male)Pg 140 Shakespeare (Romeo & Juliet) (white male)Pg 140 Lindsay Ruben (colleague – no specific info available)Pg 140 Kelly Johlic (colleague – no specific info available)Pg 142 Nate Silver, blog (white male)Pg 143 Joan Steiner, Look-Alikes (white female)Pg 144 Joseph Griffith, The Surrender (white male)Pg 145 Edward Arlington Robinson, Richard Cory poem (white male)Pg 146 Lord Byron, Darkness poem (white male)Pg 149 Rick Reilly, “A Tale of Two Little Leaguers” (white male)Pg 150 Barry Bonds (African-American male) – subject, not author (athlete)Pg 150 Hank Aaron (African-American male) – subject, not author (athlete)Pg 152 Lindsay Lohan (white female) – example of something to blamePg 152 Animal Farm – Orwell (white male)Pg 152 Lord of the Flies – Golding (white male)Pg 156 AphorismsLord Acton (white male)Benjamin Franklin (white male)Ralph Waldo Emerson (white male)Mark Twain (white male)Friedrich Nietzche (white male)Shvejtsar (white male?)Andre Gide (white male)Alfred Tennyson (white male)Albert Einstein (white male)Bertrand Russell (white male)Sylvia Plath (white female)Malcolm Forbes (white male)Winston Churchill (white male)Oliver Wendell Holmes (white male)Pg 159 Bill Plashke (white male)Pg 160 Jered Weaver, Angels pitcher (white male)Pg 160 Kendrys Morales (Latino)Torii Hunter (African-American male) -- subject, not author (athlete)Vernon Wells (African-American male) subject, not author (athlete)Pg 161 Gwyneth Paltrow (white female)Pg 163 Harper Lee (white female)Pg 163 Rudolpho Anaya (Lationo?)Pg 164 Lawrence Wright, The Looming Tower (white male)Pg 167 Jon Hein, Jump the Shark (white male)Pg 167 Henry Winkler (white male)Pg 168 Tom Keogh, amazon.com reviews, no info availablePg 169 Chris Nashawaty (white male)Pg 171 Bob Dylan (white male)Pg 171 Herb Bowie (white male)Pg 172 Michelle Waxman (white female?)Pg 173 Incubus – rock groupPg 172 Sandra Cisneros (Latina)49 references to specific people33 white males – 67%5 white females – 10%3 no info available4 African-American males, all athletes2 Latinos – 04%1 Latina -- .02%0 African-American femalesGallagher relies heavily on white men as resources and examples. He uses a lot of sports resources and examples. The only time African-American males are referenced is when they are athletes--no African-American writers used. Zero African-American women used. I have spent my weekend re-writing my lesson plans to supplement the activities with a diversity of writer/authors. The strategies seem sound but the examples need updating.

I'm teaching high school ELLs to write. I have felt like I am floundering around for years and then this book came my way. This is a FANTASTIC resource with tons of easy to implement lessons on real-world writing. I'm using this almost exclusively in my classroom and I have seen tons of improvement in my students writing and engagement. I can't recommend this book enough.

I discovered this book through participation at a National Writing Project summer institute. It has been really helpful in rethinking the way I teach writing in my classroom. This book has many writing activity ideas and examples.

I am not a teacher, my English is a foreign language. I've been looking for exercices or methods that would help me practice writing. This book was the answer! It is excellent, I started writing, many many many ideas to write about not only in English but also in another foreign language too! I loved the topic exercise I now have plenty of ideas to write about, I already wrote some and I can't wait to write again, it is highly motivating!

Reading a book or two about teaching is something that is important to me as I keep trying to develop my skills as a teacher. I read another book by Kelly Gallagher a few years ago, so I wanted to read this one. I'm glad I did because it offered many excellent tips in how to help students write better. His main philosophy stems from these two premises: 1. Teach kids to write in the modes that they will need to write in college and in the real world. 2. Write along with your students.Gallagher is a seasoned teacher who clearly loves writing and teaching writing. He is a good mentor to have as I try to better equip my students to improve in writing. My only criticism is that there does not appear to be a frame around all these great activities. At times, things felt jumbled.

This is a beautiful book with many colorful pictures! However, it is more of an encyclopedia of the varieties of Japanese maples than a "complete guide". I wish there was more information about care of the Japanese maple. The information given was very basic. I would have wanted information on using them as bonsai or training the maples for shape etc etc.. Only about 1/4 of the book is actual care information. The rest is a summary of each variety; WHICH is great! but I wasn't expecting that.Another down side is that although they have information about each variety, they are organized alphabetically. For gardeners, this is not helpful because we need them to organized by type. For example, if I were looking for a weeping type, I would have to go through the whole book. No section on groupings.

Disappointed. A great history book and listing of every imaginable type of cultivar. But very little on cultivation. Most references to cultivation are very basic, without pictures, and refer one to another book for better instructions. I already knew what I could learn from this book about cultivation and I am new at this! A thorough book, so I won't bash it. But it is not what a newly interested grower is interested in.

This book just keeps getting thicker and thicker with each release! Now it's a hefty textbook size. The quality of the paper and colors in the book is quite good. As far as the information contained within, it's in the same vein as the previous versions. I have the 2nd version only, so compared to that, it's similar, if not better organized. The authors have expanded on the first few chapters of the book, regarding the history, and care of maples, but it's basically just added information to the previous text (a lot of it is verbatim from the earlier edition). I like how the cultivars are now organized simply by name. I'm not sure if this was something done in the 3rd ed, but in the 2nd, the cultivars were broken down into leaf shape, and then alphabetical. This was more difficult for me, and really served no purpose (in my opinion). The layout now makes more sense. The information for each cultivar is similar to previous editions. A couple of paragraphs with factual information regarding leaf type, shape, sun/shade requirements, etc. And of course, it includes a lot more than previous editions, as new cultivars are introduced. The book does have a few drawbacks though. My biggest gripe is with some of the photos. Though most are beautiful and accurate glossy photos, some are way overly photoshopped. Many people will make their maple selections based on what they think the leaves will look like, and some of the photos are so over the top, the reader will surely be disappointed when they see their maple in reality does not show the brilliant coloration as in the photo. One example is the photo of Ap Crimson Queen. You will clearly see the color "dial" in photoshop was turned to maximum, as the colors just simply look too saturated. There are plenty of other photos in the book which do not reflect the true nature of the plant illustrated. Comparing to my own collection, it is clear some of the book's photos have been tweaked to bring out aspects of the leaf which may not normally be so striking.Another nit-picky problem I have is with some of the name changes. Though perhaps scientifically and technically correct, changing some of the names around just makes it confusing. I have known "Ap Aka Shigitatsusawa" to be Aka Shigitatsusawa for a long time, and that is the way most nurserys (online and physical) call it. But the author made a specific point to rename this selection Ap Beni Shigitatsusawa. It may be technically correct, but trying to find the former in the book leads to a dead end. There are other examples of this, and it's nit-picky I know...but perhaps they could have better led the reader to the new, corrected entry.Overall, this is a nice, high quality book with good information. Though some of the photos could be more realistic, most are fine and only add to the information. It's one of the best quick reference books and makes a nice coffee table book. If you are a Japanese maple enthusiast, you'll find this book to be very good and full of good information.

Great resource for JM lovers.. but keep in mind these are Oregon observations sizes, colors, hardiness. and Oregon is very much like Japan.. and most of you do not live in either place . so take his writings with a grain of salt and don't expect same results. But this is a treasure trove of information.

Great book with excellent images and descriptions. I've used all three editions and this edition is the only book I know that covers most of the cultivars generally available. This book will be of interest to both beginners and experts and provides a common reference for discussing the various attributes of the trees listed. Just trying to keep current with the explosion of new crosses being introduced has to be a monumental task and I thank Mr. Gregory for continuing Mr. Vertrees initial work and for this excellent updated guide. You will not be disappointed in your purchase if you have any interest in Japanese Maples.

It's very nice of Peter Gregory to continue to give J.D. Vertrees so much credit. This book is the bible of Japanese Maple enthusiasts and collectors all over the world. This edition is much more comprehensive than the 3rd edition and the quality of photos is excellent. However, I was disappointed that many of the stable and worthy North American cultivars aren't mentioned and hope they will be included in subsequent editions. Still, this fourth edition is a terrific resource.

I looked at several books at a couple book stores, but couldn't find what I was looking for. After looking at different reviews online, I settled on this one. It's perfect for me because it has a very large list of different varieties and has pictures for most of them. I "collect" different varieties of japanese maples in my yard and this book is a great reference when I'm researching the next tree that I want to get or trying to identify a variety that I saw in a garden or someone's landscape.

I am a budding Japanese Maple collector and I enjoy looking through all the different varieties!
